Anybody built a pole barn/building?

The old barn is rotten and falling down (24 x 46).

I'd like to replace it with a sheet metal pole barn. Something in the 30x60 range. Shop in one end. Animal pens and hay storage in the other. Maybe 2 story with a gambrel roof, for hay storage.

We could do a DIY and save on labor, or have it built by a pro and have faster completion. Money is an object, so finding lowest cost materials will be helpful.

Has anybody built one or have had one built recently?

Any comments/inspriation/be-awares welcome.

In this area we have 4 or 5 pole barn builders, and with the crumie economy they will build one for not much more than a pole barn kit costs a average buyer when one considers frieght and hidden costs. You might shop around your area a ck prices from some builders I think they get thier materials at a much better price than a homeowner

I have a 20x60 with trusses (no second floor) and a 32x28 with almost a flat roof. I built them both. If you are starting with nothing, i.e. no salvaged materials, the tin and the trusses are the big expenses. You might want to try and round up some before you start if you DIY, or go with a ridge beam. Unless you need it in a hurry, DIY, have fun, and save some money...

I put up a 30 by 45 from Menards several years ago. With concrete floor total cost was about half of the local builders. Every thing was included, but they supplied to many fastners. If I did it again, I would have them delete 1-2 boxes of each kind of fastner and buy more if needed.

Like others said, if you have the time and skill, building your own is fun. However, I would price local people as well. Around here the price for pro's is coming down and it maybe cheaper and lot faster. Took me 4 months to complete by myself.
