I may be opening a can of worms here, but when he said he wasnt going to watch the winter olmpics because there was 2 many white people and it might as well be a gop conviction.Thats about as racist remark that could be said and nothings being said about it.what if a sports cominatator or sombody said i aint wayching the nba because of 2 many blacks, the poor dude would exterminated, its just this double standard is really getting on my nerves.
Probably a good thing nothing is said sure dont want to give him any publicity.just a rant i guess.

We can complain about that kind of racism till the cows come home to no avail. The double standard exists and always will.

Is that a direct quote? I thought Bryant Gumble was a bit more articulate than that.

If not a direct quote, it's a bit unfair to ask for a response to what he said without telling us exactly what he said and the context in which he said it, don't you think?

It would make a better news story than why VP Cheney didn't call the White House Press Corps the minute the ambulance left.

(234)

We all know black people can't skate, or ski. Nothing racist, just the one of those simple truths of life.

White men can't jump either. :p

Re: Anybody hear what bryant gumble said.

PW,

I found this after searching pretty hard. Apparently he said this on his HBO sports show:

C & P - Bryant Gumbel the black celebrity presenter who says the US is “hopelessly racist” and last year went to Europe to investigate the racism of European soccer fans appears to be the first to put down the Games. Speaking on his HBO programme Real Sports he said “try not to laugh when someone says these are the world’s greatest athletes, despite a paucity of Blacks that makes the Winter Games look like a GOP convention”. He went on to suggest the Winter Games are just February filler (following the NFL season) as we wait for March Madness (diverse US college basketball).

Personally, I believe that this type of thing will swing with time. I understand the double standard despite the fact that it still bothers me. At one time I even supported Affirmative Action, but believe now that it ultimately hurts the chosen minority of the week (sarcasm intended). There is no doubt in my mind that racism still exists, but despite popular opinion the US is generally, from personal experience, less racist than the rest of the world. Worldwide it is nowhere near as prevalent as Bryant Gumbel seems to think, and he ignores the obvious impact that weather and geography have on the racial make-up of the Winter Olympics.

Mr. Gumbel needs to sit down and have a little chat with Morgan Freeman who is openly against things like Black History Month etc. I believe examples such as the BET Network, the Congressional Black Caucus and the NAACP actually extend the time necessary to realize a truly colorless society, but I understand why to some these examples are not racist and are justified. Those same people simply refuse to grow and learn and look around for examples of the great strides this country has made. They prefer to look at this country as an evil place despite the wonderfully blessed lives they lead.

Don't know about skiing, but I think the skating sterotype may be on it's way out. Shani Davis is a black speed skater representing the US Olympic team. Debbi Thomas I believe won a Silver medal in womans figure skating several years back. And there are several black NHL hockey players now, one of whom is considered to be one of the best in the league (Jerome Iginla).

It may be that rather than 'CAN'T' skate, the lack of representation is due to socio-economic factors (most blacks DON'T skate as kids). Let's not forget, it was only a few years ago that the sterotype was that blacks couldn't play tennis or golf. Tiger Williams and the Williams sisters have taken a pretty big bite out of that (although it's still a mystery to me why we consider Tiger Williams primarily 'black'; he's 50% Asian, 25% Black, and 25% Caucasian).

And don't forget that the fastest man in the world in the 400 meters is white (Jeremy something?). And I believe that alot of the premiere high jumpers in the world are white as well...

Not to say that I don't believe that there is the POSSIBILITY that different races might have slightly different inherent physical characteristics in general, but it's tough to deal in generalities when you have a decent number of individuals that transcend the sterotype.

ps, you forgot to mention swimming, :) .

Re: Anybody hear what bryant gumble said.

No point,i just get tired of the media picking out certain things said by one race and tearing them apart and then the same thing is said months later by the opposite and nothings said,i should have known better cause the same happens with political views, nothing meant by it.
Thanks QC for putting up what he said.
