Started getting some surging, initially worried a drivetrain issue. Then felt like a misfire, eventually got a CEL for #3 misfire. Replaced plugs, which definitely needed it but then started getting misfires in all of 1 bank's cylinders (4/5/6). I put a timing light on the plug wires and got very intermittent spark out of the offending cylinders. Other side was consistent. I'd like to get this in shape enough to pick up a "free" (ha ha) wave runner tomorrow, it's a few hours in each direction.
I don't even have my crappy Chilton's manual with me, so no idea of the specifics of the system. From what I can tell it's a distributorless waste spark system. I don't know which sparks are wasted/which cylinders are firing at the same time. It's a 4.0L OHV engine, 97 Ranger.
I compression tested both banks and they're 130psi (dunno if my gauge is accurate, but whatever).
So...Can the coil pack fail like that (intermittent on one bank)? Position sensors must be working, ICM must be working unless it has different output wires for the different banks. Same with wiring. Anything else it can be?
