I have a 1979 17' Steury and just would like to hear from someone else who has a Steury or had a Steury. I love my Steury and would like to hear what others think of these boats. It's powered by a mercruiser 120 i/o.

S-1500 (1978) 15 foot w/85 Johnson. Solid little boat with a good ride. Seems to be well made. Enough power to ski/fish with, it is kind of your basic boat w/o frills.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

My first boat was a 1968 Steury 16 footer. V-hull with a 65 hp Merc outboard. It was a wonderful boat!

I owned it a few years back. Although it was 25 years old, it looked like it was only five. The only reason I sold it was a cross-country move.

Too bad Steurys aren't made anymore! I would buy a new one in a heartbeat! Does criss craft still make boats? That's who bought steury out.

Yup, A '79 25 foot flybridge, 5.7 chev I/O built like a tank, nice lines, just trailered it for 300 miles to bring it to home waters. Doing the touchy feely thing to it. Finding info on it? NO, it lives out of knowledge and backyard engineering. That's not hard as the Chevs and parts for the outdrive are plentiful. Can't find another soul who has one. I think I'll call it.....ORPHAN!

We had a few at the "Dizzy World" dry dock for working (towing lighting barges, skiing and what not) beat on them pretty pretty hard during 3rd shift. The boats held up well. Wouldn't mind having one. :)

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

Those were built right by where I live, really good boat and yes it is too bad they don't make them anymore.

There are/were alot of boat makers around where I am in Northern Indiana- Chris-Craft, Sea-Nymph, Smoker Craft, Starcraft, Rinker,Sylvan and of coarse Stuery off the top of my head, most pretty good boats too.
Almost forgot Godfrey/Hurricane/sweetwater ect and of coarse the best Bennington, may be biased on tha last one.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

i have an old 17 foot with a 55 johnson on it, looks like a good sturdy boat, but just got it and getting it ready for dropping it in the water for my first time, I used to have a '59 larson, it was another very durable boat
As for the steury, it has a single shaft on the steering, my first time without cables so not sure what my problem is, the cable will push the motor but not pull it back and the inside screw type shaft inside the plastic sheathing pulls out and isnt attached to the metal bar at the motor, should it be? Maybe I need a new one

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

We used to have one when I was a teenager. It was actually my grandpa's boat, he bought it new sometime back in the mid/late '70's. That thing was definitely no-frills - no internal gas tank, no hydraulic lift for the outboard motor. I don't miss the days of tripping over the external gas tanks and lines (one of which always seemed to be leaking) and then always needing to have someone back on the motor to pull that sucker out of the water when beaching or loading it. I think it was an 85HP Johnson, but could be wrong on the brand.

One of best/worst memories of that boat was pulling the cover off in the spring and finding a dead cat on one of the seats that had managed to get trapped inside over the winter. Had to replace the seats after that one.

It wasn't the prettiest thing on the lake, but it did the job.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

Love the Steury boats, hence the screen name. Here is a shot of my 1975 Steury V518 Fisherman Center Console. Recently installed a custom SS T top as well as a 1999 Mercury XR6 150 2 stroke outboard. Here is a shot of the boat with the top. This boat is built like a tank and has gotten us home big seas crossing the channel. A typical trip for us in this boat is 60 miles round trip to the Channel Islands. Love the Carolina Flare and the super deep V entry. I would buy another if I found one in a heart beat.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

Steurylover,

I have a 1976 v518 f o/b...which looks basically the same boat as yours except the ahole that I bought the boat from painted the bottom with some sort of cheap black paint that makes my bottom look terrible.
It's my first boat and I've only tooled around naraganset bay. I just got her a couple of weeks ago but I'm loving her. I'm trying to find info on them. Almost seems like a cult following...no very well known, but very well loved by those that do.

Sorry no pics yet...yours looks beautiful btw. I haven't had her in any kind of swell, I'm really curious as to how she would handle. I was out yesterday when I saw a bunch of boats tagging stripers a couple of miles off of Newport. Since I've only been out a couple of times, I didn't have the confidence to try it.. Waves were about 1-3 feet so I turned back into the bay and did some site seeing.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

Awesome boat, good find. 2-3' chop in this boat is a good day. The construction is similar to Whalers in the sense the the deck/lid is bonded to the hull as a single piece not just riveted or screwed. It is a self bailing deck which means take the water over the bow and it goes right out the back. I cross the Santa Barbara Channel in mine once a week. The SB Channel is known for rough unpredictable weather. We have been stuck in Santa Ana winds (30-60MPH) and motored our way through it. The channel is a 11 mile crossing each way. We typically go 40-80 miles on a single day trip out to the islands. I re-powered her (The Chicken of the Sea) with a 1999 2.5LTR Mercury XR6 150 outboard, it really woke the boat up from the 90HP she came with. In a lake she will do over 50 MPH GPS, we typically cruise in 2-3' chop at 30 knots. You should feel comfortable taking the boat out in rough water assuming you as a captain are prepared to be in the conditions and situations thrown at you. A good hull design does you no good if your not prepared and educated on safe boating practices. Congrats on the awesome boat, let me know if you have any questions about the boat, I would be glad to answer them for you. Shoot me some photos when you have a chance, I would love to see them. By the way, here are some White Sea Bass we caught last weekend 22 miles offshore in the Steury. The SoCal version of your striper.

Re: Anybody own a STEURY ?

I bought a 66 14 ft runabout last August and finally got it in the water last week. A previous owner cut out the transom and replaced the I/O with a 40 horse Merc outboard.Tried to replace waterpump impellor but could not get lower unit back up in place. Finally took it to a backyard mechanic about 30 miles from home and after two months got it back with a $220 repair bill.None of the local marinas will work on anything over 20 yrs old.The Merc 400 is a '71.I like the looks of her and she seems to move pretty good even tho she's rated for a 65 hp motor.
