I am wanting to replace the factory rubrail insert that came on my boat, 19 Vip bowrider. It has a few scuffs and marks on it, (I realize that it is what it's for, but I'm anal, ok?). Maybe get a different color this time, it is maroon currently.
Can anybody direct me to a source for a replacement ? (Didn't see it @ Overton's). Seems easy enough to replace (i think...). Looks like you just remove the two screws at the rear, take off the cover, and pull out the rubber (?) and tuck in the new replacement
, put the cover and screws back in place, and you're off, or am I missing something ?

thanks,

Bowriderbob

Saw a neat suggestion in a magazine (Soundings?) They suggested using rope of the correct thickness. It is cheaper, easier depending on your rail set up and can be dyed to any color.

Just replaced rubber with rope "twisted red and white" on a 26' Wellcraft. Looks great.Pounded it in with a rubber mallet.

Pursuit2150 : Do you have to replace the old rail with a new base or something like a C channel to hold the rope onto the boat?
Or do you just glass over the rope?
Can you chose much thicker ropes?
It sounds like a great idea, where could I buy something like that?

i used rope for my rub rails on my newly replaced gunnels. the old aluminum base was banged up so i used a small aluminum c channel that i purchased at home depot and just epoxyed the rope in. looks great.

If you don't go with the rope insert and opt for the rubber there is a trick it inserting it easier. Boil the insert to soften it. Then use a flat head screw driver and rubber mallet to put it in. This makes it much easier to install.

I have a 74 Robalo, and was gonna replace the present rub rail with new 1 inch twisted line, which was original equipment and had rotted out. When I priced the line I decided to go with 1 inch automotive heater hose. 50 ft box was about 20 dollars and it looks great, was super easy to install, and should hold up forever. Just put some marine black silicone in the channel before inserting the hose.
