Just wondering if anyone has ever made the trip to Bimini island in the Bahamas. If so, what kind of boat did you use? Exactly how long is the trip? When is the best time to go? Would my equipment suffice? - Key West 225DC with a reliable 2007 Yamaha F225TXR, GPS, radio and safety equipment. Also, let's hear about the island itself, how you enjoyed your trip. Thanks!!

Done the Ft. Lauderdale--> Bimini trip quite a few times in the late 80's/early 90's. 28 foot Wellcraft, twin Yammy 150's. It's 50 nautical miles from Ft. Lauderdale to Bimini.
You are at the mercy of the weather, and your boat is, well, at or below the minimum required for a reasonably safe passage (IMHO). You will be crossing the gulf stream, and it's getting the time of the year when you could get a norther coming through. If you hit that in a 22 footer, you're probably lost.
Your best bet is to get in contact with guys that go over every weekend.

Here's some info:
If you'll be crossing to the Biminis for the first time, the Bahamas Boating Flings might be the way to go. Sponsored jointly by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and the South Florida Marine Industries Association, the flings are organized fleets of not more than 30 vessels brought together to make the crossing from either Miami or Fort Lauderdale for boats of at least 22 feet, and from Palm Beach in boats at least 24 feet. Each boat pays a fee of $65 to participate. Flings are organized throughout the summer, when sailing conditions are best. For more information, call the Bahamas Tourist office in Miami at tel. 800-327-7678 or 305-932-0051.

If you are an experienced blue-water guy, had been over before, were going with a group, had a good weather forecast in July, and were a bit crazy, I'd say go for it.

The trips were good;didn't spend much time on the island back then. Those were dangerous times due to the drug traffickers. Fishing and diving were what we did.

He's right, you let the best of the season go by. By far mid June to the end of July are the best times to plan a crossing. By now you not only have possible fronts but the occasional tropical storm popping up out of nowhere. If your going single engine, for sure go in a group or at least have a buddy boat to travel with. 50 miles in a car is a no brainer, but in a boat out of radio range of shore with a ripping gulf stream current, you could be miles off your planned course in a matter of hours and every hour can widen that gap while people are searching for you.

Start planning now for your trip next year and make sure you have all the basic charts etc and survival gear plus plenty of extra water and for sure don't put yourself in a position where you have to be back on a certain day come hell or high water cause if the weather goes south you might have to sit it out.

Luck and let us know about your trip.

I have spent some time there and have seen people come over in everything from huge boats to a 20 foot bass boat (he was stuck there until we fixed the wiring problems on his bilge pump) but its all about the weather and it can change in an instant. It shouldnt be to hard to talk others into comming along in their boats and making it a group thing and you would not have to worry as much about the crossing.

It's definitely do-able, just be prepared. Spare prop, good compass, charts, spare radio (in bag), good PFDs (on you), EPIRB (rental). The group is invaluable for going over. One time a boat broke apart due to MASSIVE hull failure, we all stopped, got the guys and most of the gear off the boat before it completely went under. Somebody took them over, and they had a great time partying on an island making the best of a bad situation.

There were days when I could have taken my 13 foot Whaler over. Then there were days when I was very happy to be back on land alive.

Re: Anyone been to Bimini, Bahamas?

Could someone give me the location of a boat ramp in the Ft. Lauderdale / Port Everglades area to park my truck and trailer? Preferably somewhat safe (what a mess I would be in after a few days @ Bimini and then no way to get my rig home!) Where did you guys park? Thanks
