Ok... I have had this one problem with my suzuki '89 dt75, it chirps at high RPM's, which is a backfire. After bringing it to the local suzuki repair shop, they say our chankshaft is twisted, obviously throwing off the timing, they say the starter fluid which we used caused this problem ruining our low hour motor. But, after the starter fluid was used, our motor ran flawlessly. I just think this is a little strange. Is starter fulid known for doing that? Im pretty much in the dark here as I am new to the boating world. Any help GREATLY appreciated.

-Brett

Yes, Brett.

Starter fluid is mainly ether and has no lubricant in it. It has been known to destroy brand new engines by: washing lube off rod and crank bearings, cylinder walls and rings; pre-igniting, dieseling, and other, more mysterious misbehavior.

However, I haven't heard of an engine harmed by starting fluid running flawlessly for a while before exhibiting symptoms of the damage.

Seems to me that a crank, twisted enough to cause timing that far off would blow the engine up at lower rpm.

I am more inclined to think about ignition crossfire at high rpm.

Good luck. :)
