Just wondering If anyone ever sailed across the Atlantic, or even the pacific?

I guess you would need at least a 40 ft sailboat, and a lot of food. And you would have to navigate with just a compas, to save power, in your battery. I guess you would figure out a rhomb line to set your compas on, and then try to follow that the best you can with the wind.

you think it would take about 20 days to sail 3,000 miles?

Is this a question of plausibility or personal achievement?

I haven't personally - yet,

but a few folks have made the voyage.

On the 28th of April 1947, the Kon-Tiki raft was towed out of the harbour of Callao in Peru, and left adrift in the Humboldt Current. A hundred and one days later, after crossing 4300 miles (8000 km) of the Pacific, the raft was washed up on the Raroia reef well inside Polynesia.

Robin Lee Graham was just sixteen when he set out alone from Southern California and headed west in his 24-foot sloop. ...after almost five years [of adventuring on the high seas], Graham sailed back into his home port in Los Angeles.

On June 1, 1965 Robert Manry, a copy editor for the Plain Dealer and a Willowick, Ohio resident, left Falmouth, Massachusetts aboard his 13.5-foot sailboat, Tinkerbelle, to begin his voyage across the Atlantic Ocean. He arrived in Falmouth, England seventy-eight days later on August 17, 1965. At the time of the crossing Tinkerbelle was the smallest boat to have ever crossed the Atlantic.

When I was 14, I became the youngest person to sail across the Atlantic.

Everyone asked, "What next?". So at the age of 17, I became the youngest person to sail single-handed around the world. Robin Knox-Johnston said it could be suicidal. The head of the Royal Yachting Association told him not to go. Mike Perham ignored them and in August 2009, at the age of just 17 years, 5 months and 11 days, became the youngest person to have sailed solo around the world.

Everyone again asked , "What next?". So at the age of 18, I was going to take part in the re-enactment of the castaways from the Mutiny on the Bounty 221 years ago to the day. However, when I was training in Australia I had to have my appendix removed and I did not recover to full fitness in time.

i guess it is a question of personal achievment.
if you were sailing solo, how would you sleep?
don't you have to watch the boat, and how the wind is acting?

The feat has been accomplished solo in everything from a row boat to a high-tech yacht. Simple crossings are made by traveling with the current, sophisticated craft employ self steering devices and radar triggered alarms.

Google Atlantic and Pacific crossings and "Around Alone" racing for accounts of the preparation and equipment used. Nearly every soloist and circumnavigator has written a book about their ordeal that details both the mental and physical organizing they did to make such a venture. The risk is high with either approach.

I would do it with - a boat fit for the journey, and - a second crew member would be nice, but most importantly would be to first hone my knowledge and skills to that level through lots and lots of incrementally increasing coastal and island hopping voyages. Competence can't be found in a chandlery.

Robert Manray (check my spelling)ndid it several years ago, solo, in a 12 footer. And there have been several attempts in 8 footers. Compas, a sextant, and an accurate time piece along with charts and there you go.

Why not take a GPS too? A small solar charger could keep the batteries charged.

My brother and I set sail from Amsterdam Holland in 1969 in a 50 foot Catamaran with 2 40 horse outboards for emergencies. We went up the coast to Norway and from there to the Shetland Islands. We tried to cut from there to Greenland, instead we almost killed ourselves and we limped back to the Shetlands for repairs and from there back to Amsterdam.
At least we tried.

Re: Anyone ever sail across the Atlantic?

In 1971 my wife and 5 others on a 43 ft. aluminum racing sloop sailed from Newport RI to Gosport England. The boat was called Salty Tiger winner of 1969 SORC. Built and designed by Robert Director. It took them 21 days in June. It was not a summer experience. They never got out of their foul weather gear. My wife was the cook, and her then father in law was the owner and navigator. NO GPS!!! All crew members were experienced and capable. A helluva an experience never to be forgotten.
