Lots of experience with them (all good) but why do you need new reeds?

I am experiencing backfiring through the carbs, I took off the manifold and have a couple not closing. Check out this post for the complete background. "no fire with plugs in 1975 Evinrude 85hp"

Re: anyone ever used Boysen reeds

I installed Boyesen Power Reeds on my 1998 25hp twin cyl. Evinrude a couple years ago, they work GREAT!!!
Picked up a about 100-150 rpm at wide open throttle, however the big difference is at idle and midrange acceleration. My motor can now idle smoothly below 600 rpm so I can now troll down to a crawl, and I now have noticeable increase in acceleration, so I can come up on plane allot faster especially under a heavy load.
Aside from Smart Tabs, the Boyesen Power Reeds was the best thing that I bought for my boat!

Hopefully, the reeds will make the backfire go away. If not, you'll toast the new reeds quickly.

Yep, that's the one thing that hurts the Boyesens. It'll burn the tips in a heartbeat.

Make sure to adjust your idle mixture screw(s) as stated in the instruction manual following the installation of the reeds. The richer mixture should help prevent a lean "sneeze" condition and backfiring.

Re: anyone ever used Boysen reeds

I called boysen a few years ago when looking to put them on an evinrude 20 hp I was converting to a 30 hp. The tech on the line told me 300 hours is the expected life range.
I opted out on the boysend reeds on my 70 hp because I fish every weekend all winter long and have the kids skiing all summer long.
My motor burns 18 gallons of fuel every weekend fishing and 20 to 24 gallons skiing. Thus I could need a set every year.
I live with in about 15 minutes of 2 good bass fishing lakes Lake Columbia and Lake Irling. And with in 3 hours of some of the best striper in the US.
I would hate to have a reed fail and reck my weekend since I don't get to fish that often :)

Re: anyone ever used Boysen reeds

I purchased the reeds about 2 years ago and have yet to put them in. The reason is listed above about the carbs and the lean sneeze. I do not know how to adjust the carb or get the correct part to do so. Does anybody know the procedure or where to get the parts for my motor. 1983 75 HP.
