I am heading to Myrtle Beach for the week from CT, I am wondering if there is good surf fishing down there, and what websites I could maybe check out for permit info and location mapping, also what should I fish for down south from the beach in the first week of July?

Now it has been a while since I have been there. The State Park pier and Springmaid pier are good alternative to regular surf fishing allowing you to get out past the breakers, but there is a small fee to use the piers. You could try looking up the Chamber of Commerce for Myrtle Beach, last I checked they had a lot of good info on there. Flounder should be biting along with croaker and whiting. May even get lucky and find some redfish in the surf also. Hope that helps you out a lil bit.

You might try www.scfishingreport.com or go SCDNR site and look for salt water trends. Both can be great sources. Also some head boats in N. Myrtle/Little River. But whatever you do, be prepared for the heat; last 3 days in the 100's...

Summertime Spots in the surf close to the beach is the best. Bring a cooler and load up on them. Enjoy!

I grew up in MB. Never had much luck surf fishing in the summer. I also was nervous tossing a line due to the multitudes the beach. I always went to the pier at the state park. Nice relaxing time...

I agree, Scrat. I was stationed at the old AFB there in the 70's and we caught many fish (a square grouper once) in the summertime surf.....from a pier. I don't recall the pier being at the State Park at that time. But then, I don't recall much from those days. We did alot of surfing at the park and crabbin' down the Murrels Inlet area.

I do recall the police...a trash bag of empty beer cans...a camera...and 4 drunk buddies at Alice's grave.

I agree with the peir fishing is better most of the time, the beaches are usually so crowded that you can't surf cast without putting swimmers in danger.

Live shrimp and finger mullet are great baits, but are expensive and will be hard to keep alive in the heat. Your best bet will be to buy a Sabiki rig with #14 or smaller hooks and tip each hook with a small piece of fresh or frozen shrimp. Attach a 1 or 2 oz. sinker to the bottom of the rig and drop it down by the peir pilings to catch your own bait (Pilchards, Butterfish, and Pin fish). Have a second rod rigged and ready to put your live bait on, rig that rod with 2 oz. egg sinker then a swivel, a 2 or 3' leader and then a 3/0 circle hook. Cast it out as far as you can and wait.

If you don't already have surf casting rods, you can buy them at a local wal-mart down there for about $40-50. Be sure to wash them off with freshwater after every use. I would advise leaving your freshwater tackle at home, the salt will eat them up.

Be prepared to catch loads of Hardhead (saltwater catfish "trashfish") and maybe a few nice quality fish.

Watch other people on the peir to see how they're rigged and what they're using for bait and catching. Don't be afraid to talk to these people 99% of peir folks are friendly and will help you.

btw, if you catch a catfish, a toadfish, and a skate or ray we call that a "Trashcan Slam":D:rolleyes:
