I have a new helm, steering wheel and console. I need to remove the wheel so that I can rotate the helm (clearance issue below). I have jerked and snatched and cannot get the wheel off. The console is not screwed down yet, which limits the amount of force I can use. I have s car steering wheel puller, but it does not rig up to help. Any ideas?

The wheel is usually on a tapered shaft with a key for alignment. Heat the area with a hair dryer, squirt some Kroil or other good penetrating oil, not WD40 and reheat. Wiggle the wheel from side to side and it should work lose.

If it is a tapered shaft, then loosten the nut a turn or turn and a half. Use a soft faced big hammer and rap it smartly while pulling on the wheel at the same time.

It is worth going down to the local autoparts supplier and seeing if you can borrow or rent a correct puller. Even with the correct puller it may take a rap on the puller spindle after you put tension on the wheel.

i loosen the nut so that it is even with the end of the bolt. i get in positon, with my knees behind wheel, appling pressure. then a good rap on the nut while appling pressure. usually pops right off.
