I've been doing a little work on my boat lately. Yesterday I took her out for a test run with all the rear seating and engine enclosures removed. The loudes noise was clearly from the air flowing through the flame arrestor.

I couldn't help but think that the friction necessary to produce that much noise has got be cause some resistance. Perhaps I'm wrong.

Does anyone have an experience with replacing the flame arrestor with a larger or more high performance one?

If so, can you share your experience as well as the brand and model you used?

My power plant is a 5.7 bbl Mercruiser. The size of the jets in the carb has been increased (before I obtained the boat).

was it king of a 'roar'? Engines will sound like that under big throttle inpuy without any air cleaner or arrester on them... you just arent used to hearing it.

but i could be wrong.

No, it was deffinitly a sucking noise, not a roar... more akin to loudly sucking (or blowing) air through your teeth (louder than you could do with your mouth).

(Someone doing a dirty Google search is going to be disappointed when they find this post)

K&N makes a good one.

From what I've seen, they make one of the only ones. Do you have any experience with it? Did you notice any increase in throttle response or decrease in fuel consumption. I know it's not going to be a magic pill, but I thought it might help out some. With fuel approaching $4/gallon, every little bit might help (and it certainly changes the cost-benefit ratio).

Ayuh,....

The 7.4l Merc motors breathe thru the Same flame arrester as the 5.7l motors,......
And the 7.4l is a pretty Healthy Breather...

The Sucking Sounds you hear is the Motor,.....

The Restriction of the 5, 1/8" throat Flame Arresters is almost Non-existent....

The Financial Payback from buying a K&N will run well into the Thousands of Hours of motor time.....

People call me crazy sometimes, but I picked up a good 1.4MPH GPS with the K&N. I swapped back and forth 4 times with the same results. It also dyno tested a few more horses then with the stock merc arrestor when I had the motor out for a cam swap. I picked mine up on eBay for 25 bucks.

Thanks guys.

I guess I won't run out and buy one at retail price, but I'll keep my eyes open for a deal on ebay.

And if it makes a difference... though it's on a 5.7 now, it's the same flame arrestor that came off of my 305ci when I did the short block replacement a couple seasons ago.
