Anyone have pics of mercruiser 165 original fuel line routing aroujnd engine?

my engine just has a hacked in rubber line from carb and a bent up steel line not hooked up, would love to make a new line the route of the OEM one.

mine just comes straight up from fuel pump, over the top of the engine at a slight angle towards carb and then an approx 90 degree angle about 6 inches from carb and straight into the inlet. just by coincidence i replaced mine today as the old steel one was starting to drip up by the carb and the brass screw in thing was rounded off. i used a steel brake line and had to cut it and the old line to get the fuel pump fitting to put on the new one. rejoined with a compression fitting.

I do not have a picture but it starts forward at the fuel pump turns up and it should be clamped on the lift bracket. Then turns around the front of valve cover to the carburetor with a bend depending on which way the main fuel inlet is facing. This should get you in a good direction. Hopefully some one will post a picture. As you probably know it must be double flared. NAPA sells 5/16” steel lines with the flare nuts but you will have to cut one end for the final fit.

Some models cross the valve cover as the other post states if there is a 1/4” 20 thread on the top of tha cover then a clamp can be mounted. The main thing is to keep the line from vibrating.

mine crosses the valve cover in front of the oil cover about 4 or five inches.there is a clip bolted to the valve cover that it passes thru on mine.between the oil cover and the 165hp writing.mine is flared on both ends but the fitting on the fuel pump end wouldn't connect to the fuel pump and i cut it off and used the original filling on that flared end

Ayuh,..... A 3/8" brake line with the fittin' that takes a 5/8" wrench, is exactly the same as yer carb fittin',.....

Nothin' wrong with a double flare, it fits perfectly,.....

The fuel pump end is many times a brass compression fittin' that uses a rubber, rather than brass compression ring,....
Reuseable if it ain't torn up,.....

Well. I have no idea how anyone can be advising you without knowing if this 165 is a 4 cylinder or 6 cylinder. ... An engine serial number would also be handy and a year of manufacture. ...

6 cyl, sorry i thought the engine was a 165, is that the outdrive then? i assume its a chevy 250? i have no idea what liter it is

'165' is the engine model designation... Drives are MC-1, R, MR, Alpha One, Alpha One Gen II.... The label on the drive that says '165' is an engine designator... Was Merc's flavour at the time. Later they went to putting the engine capacity in that place, like '3.0L', 4.3LX, 5.7L.... And later they moved to save some money, and there is now no designator on there...

Merc produced 2 engine models called '165', which is why I asked the question. The one you have, a GM in-line 6, 250 cu in (4.1 litre), and later a 4 in-line (3.7 litre), a variant of the infamous '470'....

Your fuel line could either be a steel reinforce rubber line, that runs around the front of the head and up to the carb, like this picture...



Or a hard steel line that runs up over the top of the rocker cover, like this one....

Sorry, one more thing... NEVER, EVER be tempted to do what we see far too often. Put a small plastic in-line fuel filter in that fuel line... :facepalm:

The only filter should be a spin-on water separating filter, mounted to the bulkhead, and plumbed between the tank and the inlet side of the fuel pump..... And that one is virtually mandatory...

The first 6 cylinder models had a rubber line as Chris displayed and later with the 5/16” steel lines had a taller lifting bracket that mounted the clip to stabilize the line then later models crossed the valve cover which was the last production series.
ALL fuel lines MUST be double flared. A good tubing bender and some patience should get the job done. I would not be surprised if the line is still available from some of the dealers who have N O S parts in stock or maybe Mercruiser.
What size is the inverted flare fitting going into the carburetor 5/16” or 3/8th” Does the fuel pump have a 1/8th” or 1/4th” NPT female outlet? You need to know this before buying the tubing.

Just buy a water separating filter kit, like this one https://www.iboats.com/shop/sierra-18-7852-1-fuel-water-separator-kit.html (say you're a forum member and get a discount ) and mount it in a convenient place, run the line from the fuel tank into one of the inlet ports (there's one on each side for even more convenience) and a line from one of the outlet ports, also one each side , to the suction side of the fuel pump. Use S/S hose clamps to stop any air leaks.

Too easy.

Im an outboard tech by trade but stern drive is all new to me pretty much. every FWS ive looked at like that said outboard only in small print, no idea why.

The ones with the plastic bowl are outboard only; the ones for inboards either have the plain one piece filter or a two piece filter with a metal bowl.

there is a place to mount the water separator / filter assembly just behind the fuel pump on mine. there is also a filter in that high part on top of the fuel pump and another small filter inside the gas inlet in the carb. the one in the carb has a spring behind it, be careful not to lose it. you can change it by removing the larger screw in fitting on the carb that the brass fitting screws into.
