This topic has came up a few times before. You might try searching for engine stand. I have some pics of mine here: http://picasaweb.google.com/mmullis?pli=1

I made it very similar to another one I saw on this site. For a 5hp I don't think you need anything very heavy duty. I wish mine had wheels.

I just bolt a piece of wood to a regular automotive engine stand. Just make sure you use a big enough piece so you can mount it high enough to clear the lu.

If you use a stand that has the U-shaped lower legs you can fit a can of water between them and run your motor.

I used a sawhorse, perfect height for cleaning garbage cans (running it in the garbage can), I also have put a 2 x 4 in the bench vise to work on it.

Re: anyone have plans for a OB stand?

I use a common automotive engine stand for my medium to larger motors, I simply take a section of 2 x 12 and bolt it to the face of the stand where the fingers would normall be. I bought a couple of cheaper stands for about $15 each on sale at Harbor Freight and they work great. For the really large motors, I built a larger wood frame on a dolly, this lets me move it around and even outdoors for a test run.
For the big stand I simply used two 4x4 uprights, a 2 x 12 across the top to hang the motor on, and then I built a pallet and diagonal braces to support the uprights. I used all scrap wood for my first one, it's been around now for several years. I just built a larger one to hold a 200 Hp too, that one's all Pressure treated wood and sits atop four 8" casters on a steel frame.

For anything three cylinders or less the automotive engine stand works fine. I also have a few diagonal boards in several corners that hang a few smaller motors as well, but only the real light ones. I like anything thats too heavy to lift to be on wheels. Even a three wheel engine stand is plenty stable for most smaller outboards. The added length of the engine stand also allows tilting the motor up and it's stable enough to work on.

I also suppose you could modify an inexpensive hand truck as well, simply add a board across the top to clamp or bolt to and your set. It depends how much space you have and whether you plan to work on or test run on the stand.

When I was looking, I collected a lot of pictures, many of which are already listed in this thread. I collected these pictures for my own use and normally wouldn't repost them since I can't credit the builders, but hopefully they won't mind.

You can see what I found here:

I made my own OB stand with an old broken steel lawnmower, welded on 2 pieces of steel tubing going up and added a wood piece across, works like a bomb, I can cart the motor around ... maybe I have a pic ...... oh here it is ......

Those are my two, I know the Johnson one is in a couple of those links above. Both are still working just fine. I do wish the one for my 25hp was a little wider and a little higher. The height it is at now is just a hair to low to make it wasy to change the lower unit lube while on the stand. I can fit a pan down there, but can't get the screwdriver at the right angle. The stand my little fisherman on has since been modified a little. The board that I clamp it to is longer than in the pic so that I can rest the entire transom clasp on it.

Heres mine, I didnt really have plans for it, just kinda did it. Its on casters so I can move it around easily. Its not really as big as it looks in the picture. The pallet is about 3 feet square.

After viewing other OB stands, I built my own today.
Holds both my Evinrude 9.5HP and Trolling Motor like a champ!

Thanks for the tips ...
