Re: anyone have plans for a OB stand?
I use a common automotive engine stand for my medium to larger motors, I simply take a section of 2 x 12 and bolt it to the face of the stand where the fingers would normall be. I bought a couple of cheaper stands for about $15 each on sale at Harbor Freight and they work great. For the really large motors, I built a larger wood frame on a dolly, this lets me move it around and even outdoors for a test run.
For the big stand I simply used two 4x4 uprights, a 2 x 12 across the top to hang the motor on, and then I built a pallet and diagonal braces to support the uprights. I used all scrap wood for my first one, it's been around now for several years. I just built a larger one to hold a 200 Hp too, that one's all Pressure treated wood and sits atop four 8" casters on a steel frame.
For anything three cylinders or less the automotive engine stand works fine. I also have a few diagonal boards in several corners that hang a few smaller motors as well, but only the real light ones. I like anything thats too heavy to lift to be on wheels. Even a three wheel engine stand is plenty stable for most smaller outboards. The added length of the engine stand also allows tilting the motor up and it's stable enough to work on.
I also suppose you could modify an inexpensive hand truck as well, simply add a board across the top to clamp or bolt to and your set. It depends how much space you have and whether you plan to work on or test run on the stand.
