Wife needs a newer car. I have always loved the Lincoln Mark series. It's sleek and luxurious. I showed the wife some pics of the car and she said she would drive it. Looking to buy a 96 or 97 these years seem to fit into my price range $2000.00-$5000.00 range. My question is does anyone own one? Do you like it? Has it been reliable? What don't you like about it? I have owned Lincoln's before (3 older Town Cars and a gas guzzling Navigator) and I have had little if any trouble with these vehicles. Any thoughts?

Wish I could help ya Fireship, but you are wise in seeking an opinion. For starters, I believe that Lincoln has the dual overhead cam modular V8. A pretty good engine. Other than that those cars have a lot of scarey goodies on them that would be expensive if they broke down.

Mrs Boomyal just bought a new 2005 Lincoln LS. It may not be the powerhouse that the MK is but it sure is sweet. All the do-dads scare me to death though.

My dad owns one I believe from 99. His has the same engine as the mustang and has about the same acceleration. Biggest problem is when things start going bad it gets real expensive. His head light went out and it cost 750 dollars to have it replaced. A month later the other one went and then another 750 bucks. Spark plugs are about 12 bucks a piece. Talk to a mechanic first and find out what he thinks. They are beautiful and awsome when they are new.

Thanks for the reply's guys. I went to see one yesterday. Nice car. The guy that's selling it is a local police officer and a nice guy to boot. He originally wanted 4500.00 for it but I got him down to 3500.00 and told him I would think it over for a day or two. Car only has 61,000 on the odo and looks like it was well taken care of. Just a few dings here and there from the parking lots. Most problematic part of these cars seems to be the four wheel air suspension. They develop leaks when they get older. Can sometimes be expensive to fix. His price is fair, every other car like this seller wants at least 6000.00 with over 100,000 miles.

Don't know if this helps but ford continues to have issues with the air suspension. The current expedition has tsb's out on them for it. It might be worth a phone call to see if you can simply replace them with standard shocks. Either way, 3500 for a car with 61K is a smokin' deal if the milage is indicative of the condition. Other than that I don't have any insight into this type of vehicle.

Re: Anyone here own a Lincoln Mark VIII

I worked on a couple of the first models when they came out in '04- pretty click rides I thought. That 32 valve engine really sung a nice song! If you rolled along at about 25 mph and thenm punched it, you could almost hear the NASCAR sound from the exhaust. Yes, it really did sound that good. I was very impressed by the power, the ride and the handling. Did you know that the entire suspesnion drops by 1" at speeds over about 85 mph? It's computer controlled and it's a wild feeling when it happens. On the other hand, air ride suspensions on cars have been headaches for years. It's a problem center for sure.

The engine, being a modular design, was very easy to work on, but yes, pretty expensive. I don't know about that headlight story- I replaced a few bulbs in them and they were no different than standard bulbs. Didn't seem like a big deal top me. I do know that to "pull" the engine I had to actually drop it out the bottom. That was different. It wasn't an engine you were going to mess with anyway- I wasn't even allowed to work on them. Ford just sent a new assembly in a crate and I replaced them. I did two almost immediately upon their release due to an oil pump issue, but never saw many issues after that.

I liked the car but left the profession shortly afterwards and didn't have much more experience with them. I do remember the sound system ROCKED though.

UFM82

Re: Anyone here own a Lincoln Mark VIII

Thanks guys for the additional replies. Pointer, yep I heard the same thing about the air issues. Ford seems to have lots of issues with the air suspension on all of their vehicles. Ford, Lincoln and Mercury. Cracked air bags, leaky fittings, and noisy air compressors seem to be the norm. The last car I had with air susp was a 1993 Lincoln Town Car. I owned this car from 1996 to 2001 and never had a leak or a problem. But I know of others that had major problems. One guy I know had the system leaking so bad that it looked like the car was laying down on the ground! I know that you can pull the air bladders and replace with spring kits. I have seen them online before. UFM82, I took this car for a ride and it is fast. I have had cars with the 4.6 modular V8 before, but never the DOHC version. It has some major torque and acceleration! I used to work at a Lincoln Mercury dealer some years ago before I became an A/P tech. I remember pulling a trans on one of these cars. The engine and trans come out as a unit on a cradle. The whole cradle drops out from the underside just as you mentioned. I wouldn't want to think about doing that at home. What a PITA to get this thing out and then back in again! The more I look online and around, the more this car is starting to sound like a great deal. I'm going to call the gentleman today (hopefully he still has it!) and see if maybe I can tweak $500.00 more off the price for an even $3000.00. The car does need new tires. Maybe he will allow 5 bills more off the price to compensate for that. We'll see. :D

Well, after a bit of telephone wheeling and dealing I got him down to $3200.00. Tried to get to $3000.00 but this was the lowest he would go. Think I should cave in and buy it?

Somewhere there must be an 'owners manual' on negotiating. If I'd a been the seller, upon your first offer, I'da asked you if you were ready to buy if I accepted your offer.

If you said no, I'd tell ya to come back when you were ready to put your money where your mouth was. If ya did it again to me, I'da turned and walked away.

I guess I'm kinda "beating around the bush" with this deal Boomyal. Usually when I want something I'm in such a hurry to buy it. Excitement always seems to rule my brain! :D Maybe it's because this was the first car that I looked at. I'm a little afraid that I will find "the better one" around the corner right after I plunk my money down. He still has the car, but I haven't brought it yet. Just looking around to see if there are any others with less dents and wear and tear.

From the mechanical view, yes to problems with air suspenion and ABS pumps need deep pockets for these pumps.Do yourself a favor and buy some moisture reading test stripes[auto stores] and pop the top off the master and test before you buy any car,ABS pumps do not last long with the moisture in them esp Ford, replaced many from 700.00 to 1300.00 just the pump

Re: Anyone here own a Lincoln Mark VIII

Thanks a bunch Dolluper. ABS pumps are a pain to change. Did one on my moms 91 Caddy a while back. I think it was around 1400.00 from GM. It was in a bad spot and all of the fittings were tight. Real tight! Was afraid I would round them off when removing them. I got lucky, all went well. Now the bleeding proceedure....that was a whole other nightmare! :D

Mark 8 is one high performance vehicle. Have been looking at them myself over the last few years. The biggest problem is the air spring system. Have it checked out by a dealer to see if there are any problems with the system that you don't see. Good luck!

Re: Anyone here own a Lincoln Mark VIII

Well, after careful thought and a bit of research I have decided not to buy from this owner. I took the VIN number and ran a Carfax report on it. When the report came back that was all the reason I needed. I don't mind that the car had several owners. I do mind that the gentleman that was selling to me forgot to disclose that this car actually has 160,000 + miles instead of the 60,000 that he advertised. He never told me that they issued a "exceeds mechanical limits" title for the vehicle. I guess I should have looked at the VIN research sooner. Glad I didn't jump into this one. A few people have told me to try and find a generation II vehicle (after 1996) they worked out some issues that were problematic in generation I vehicles (1993 to 1996) Carfax is the way to go if looking at used. It will tell you the vehicles whole history and verifies odometer history. Back to the search for me. Anyone have any good used car sources? Online, previous dealers, etc? Thanks in advance! :)

I would keep an eye on Craigslist -autos. That can be a very good source for local used cars.

Google auctions in your area or close, what you were looking at goes cheap at auctions ,as do most FORDS :D :D 1000.00 for scrap metal is a bit high though

Re: Anyone here own a Lincoln Mark VIII

Well, I found another Mark VIII. This one is really nice 1998 LSC model. Fully loaded (except sunroof, can't have it all I guess!) Metallic burgundy. A few dents and some scratches but otherwise in great shape. Guy was asking 4,000.00 asked him if he would go down to 3,6000.00 and would he accept my offer if I committed to buy (a good tip by Boomyal) He thought for a few and said OK. So it's a done deal now. A BIG thank you to Boomyal. I found the car on Craigslist.org (he recommended this site for used cars) Been looking for one like this, didn't think I would find it so soon. Thanks to everyone who gave advice, it is greatly appreciated! ;)
