Looks like I am going to make my first trip to
California.
I have found a boat to replace my smashed Crestliner.
Its a 2000 Starcraft 191 Islander. I am hoping it
will make a good fishing setup.
I will be making my way in a few days. Not sure
of my route yet but I would like to take the most
direct one from Calgary. Anyone still boating in
the area.

I think you will be living up no your NickName on that trip NS. That's one long haul for a boat. Must be an awful good deal. Have a safe trip.

Being a refugee from SO Cal, I'd say that recreational boating is finished there. Not sure about fishing activity.

I think I can get there in 2 days. I have never
been there and would like to see it. Used boats
are quite expensive here, and selection is very
poor. I found the same model and year here in Canada
on the coast. Price was more than $9000 higher after
converting to U.S. funds.

Wow NS, that'd pay for a lot of Motel 6's. How bad are they gonna whack ya when you bring it back in?

If you've never been there before you should do a little planning and take in a few sights. You won't be too far from DisneyLand for starters.

I only have to pay for the GST. Goods and services tax.
Which amounts to 7% of the selling price. And a
209.00 dollar customs charge for the trailer.
Making this trip will save me a considerable sum.
This boat looks to be in excellent condition.
My only concern is the reliability and longevity of the riveted
hull.

Wouldn't be concerned about a riveted hull there NS. It will hold up just fine, no worries. ;)
BTW, fine looking boat, worth the trip me thinks.

Boat looks fine, hope the tires & bearings are up to the return trip. Since you'll be in Long Beach looking at boats, check out the Queen Mary.

I think you are right shortly.
Rick I will be giving the trailer, tires and
bearings a pre trip inspection. As Boomyal mentioned
I'm sure there will be plenty of sights to see, I
bet you cant miss the Queen Mary. :)

You and I aint that far apart to begin with in the grand scheme of thing's. And I also made a trip to California to pick up a crestliner for way under market. Seems they don't like crestliners out there. I went to newport beach to get mine seems to me it was about 5000 miles, Long ways but I have never regretted it for a moment. But round up a couple buddies to help drive if ya can. It took us two days to get there of solid driving and two days back.

I'll be with ya in spirit...

Neumanns, I am surprised that there would be that much
of a difference from where you are and California.
I suppose the shear number of boats on the coast is
a large factor in determining resale value.
The buddy system sounds like a good idea.
It would sure help make the trip.

Tylerin,
Thanks for not being like most other So Cal people. Their instructions would have put them by names.
"Take the Santa Monica Freeway, to the blah, blah, blah."
I never could remember any of the other names. I just remember that I10 was the Santa Monica. I think... :D

AK Chappy

Re: Anyone in Long Beach CA.

No problem Nosleep, I'm a couple hours North. Temps in the 80's right now. Hope to get some rain soon. (I'm an avid duck hunter and we need it). Anything I can do to help you, let me know. Boats in santa Monica have seen alot of salt water, and alot of pounding to get to the islands. Appears to be a Galv. trailer.
On I15 in Vegas there's a new Bass Pro shops right off the freeway. It's huge. A must see. Then about 3 hrs to the 138 towards palmdale

Re: Anyone in Long Beach CA.

NOSLEEP,

Have you left yet? I was poking around with my GPS software and it showed going over to I5 in WA for a total of 1911 miles. Going down the 15 through Salt Lake and into Long Beach from there was only 1666 miles. Go figure? If you come down the 15 I would come all of the way into Southern CA on the 15 and then head into Long Beach on the 91. I understand tylerin's advice, but that is because he lives north and thinks that way . . . i.e. a more Northerly route. Again, I'd make my way all of the way South on the 15.

Boomer is full of it :) . Recreational Boating and Fishing are alive and well in So Cal ;)

AK,

Most of us have dropped the freeway names now. We just use numbers. It's still a little different I have noticed. The rest of the country would say "take I15 to State Route 91". We would say "take the 15 to the 91". I think the use of "the" ahead of the number is left over from the names i.e. "The San Diego freeway to the Santa Monica". We don't know the difference between an Interstate and a State Route; they're all just freeways . . .

Re: Anyone in Long Beach CA.

Hello Quietcat.
I have not left yet. I got to thinking Neumanns
idea was worth checking into. I found a buddy
that would make the trip with me, but he cant go
till this Friday evening. So I have made arrangements
to pick the boat up on Sunday morning. If all goes
well on the way down I should be there Saturday night.
We will drive in 6 hr shifts and should arrive in 24 hrs.
I did do a google search and found Mapquest.
It outlined a route taking I-15 to CA-91,{ 1070.9 miles}
Merge onto CA-91 towards Beach Cities then CA-55 S
then onto CA-22 toward Long Beach.
Total trip 1581.95 miles @ 22hrs 49 minutes according
to Mapquest. So I will be puttsing around all week
waiting to make a mile. :D

Re: Anyone in Long Beach CA.

I live 15 minutes from Long Beach and the harbor. Shoot me an e-mail and I will give you better directions as well as what highways to stay off due to massive congestion. From what state do you think you will be entering California from? Oregon, Nevada, Arizona? All have diffrent routes which are better than others...

Kruorock@firstratelending.com

Good luck!

Kevin
