anyone know about 5200

i installed my gar-board drain plug today . it all went well untill the top screw . i drilled twice and each time while tightening the screw ,the head broke off . i finally drilled an oversize hole and got a screw tight and it cinched it up good .then that head popped off . i said to my self 5200 is pretty strong , there was no shortage of it in there ,and the larger screw filled any gaps from the previous two holes . ......question is do you think the 5200 will hold in this case . ;

A couple of observations:

1. There appears to be a gap between the garboard fitting and the transom. If you had put adequate 5200, it should have squeezed out and filled that gap.

2. Those screws appear to be undersized and of the wrong material (should be brass but they appear to be steel- drywall screws??). Did they come with the fitting?

at the time of the picture it was before i used the large screw to cinch it up . so there is not a space there now . the screws are stainless #6 from west marine . and the third head broke off . unbelievable . im wondering if the 5200 will hold . and im wondering why the screws would fail if the 5200 is so strong . oh it did squeeze out by the way i just cleaned it up real good with wd40 and about 60 paper towels ,and i did clean the threads after the picture ,the 5200 is black and kind of does give it a gap/shadow effect but it did squeeze out.

I'd remove the flange, fill the holes from the inside out with 5200, generously swab the drain plug opening with 5200 to completely seal the transom core, rotate the flange to get a 'clean' area for new holes, drill proper sized holes for proper fasteners (the holes should not go completely thru the transom), fill the new holes from the inside out with 5200 and run a bead of 5200 around the mating surfaces, stick the flange in the hole and run the screws in.

Give that 5200 at least 72 hrs or more to be full strength.......

Okay, that's better, but you should replace those screws with #8 or #10 brass screws, whichever fit the countersink properly, to reduce corrosion.

It's black? I've never seen black 5200..not doubting you just saying I've never seen black 5200.:)

To give you an idea of how strong that stuff is.. Yesterday I bought a 70hp outboard. The PO had sealed it on his boat with 5200. After removing all the engine mounting bolts the motor was still sealed fast with just the 5200.

3 guys pulling up on the leg could not break the seal. We had to use a hammer and drywall chisel all the way around the mounting bracket before we could get it loose.

5200 is very, very strong.
