I have a 1998 Mercury 150HP, black max, carbuerated engine. I wish I knew the serial number but mine starts with OB and ends in 919...I didnt' see any of those letters or numbers on the list in the above post...I found this number on the transom mount where it says serial number? Anyways...My cranking battery runs my boat and I dont' think its charging when it runs. My guage always reads just below 12 and dwindles down as the lights or radio runs....When its running...it still stays there...even 10 volts sometimes. I found the rectifier and pulled off the stator wires and they zeroed out on the multimeter...I ran the boat and pulled the positive battery cable off....The charging wire ties into it on the starter solenoid...I checked it and there was 12 volts difference between the loose cable and the battery itself...telling me there is nothing coming down that line to charge the battery...I checked the wires going on to the rectifier to ground and they were fluctuating all over the place, and the lead going to the battery was still zero....is this a bad rectifier? Thanks

Re: anyone know the charging system?

If you ran the motor with teh battery cable disconnected, you likely damaged the rectifier or voltage regulator. BTW - My '93 135V6 has dual 20A voltage regulators. If your motor is newer than 1993, you should have either dual VRs like me or a single 40A VR.

get on the Maxrules.com website and look up the model year guide by serial num and HP. it will give your the year. Now get on the crowleymarine.com web site and look up the exploded parts charts by year and HP and see what you have.

BTW - My '93 135V6 Serial num starts with 0D.

Thank you...I will check that...but I pulled the rectifier after some other tests off of the boat. I did the ohmeter and checked it and from all terminals to the other it was open, which means its bad, so I will get another one tomorrow and give it a shot...mine is a 1988. Thanks again though.
