I am trying to get my motor running right and have spent all my money on parts so i havent been able to afford the manual yet but does anyone know the point gap on a 1966 60 hp johnson? could improper gap cause a low top speed? and are the 2 sets of points supposed to be set the same?

.020", both the same. Is your belt timing correct? That certainly will affect power and speed.

If you ever forget, under the distributor cap where the breaker points reside, look for these words casted right into the housing SET POINTS TO .020.

i found that just before i checked the post. i was taking the whole pulley off and had never taken the tin cap off the pulley. i found one side of the engine had no spark and cleaned the points. now i have spark on all 4 so i will try to get it in the lake tomorrow to find out if that did the trick.
