I am in need of a motor and I am confused as to what will work.
My boat is a 1981 Sea Ray SRV225.
260 mercruiser, MR-1 Drive
First: I have looked high and low there is no serial # on my motor, so I am going to assume it has been replaced at some point in the last 30 years. Car motor, I don?t know. Not that it makes any difference at this point, but the motor casting # 14010270. But it is trash. Leaks water out spark plug holes.

What year motors will work? I think I have read that I need pre 1987. Is that correct?

I know where there is an 84 mercruiser 228 with couple hundred hours on rebuild with paperwork, no power steering. Would my PS mount right up? I would have to buy the whole boat with trailer.

I also know of a 79 mercruiser 260 that is ?complete and ready to drop in? per the sellers description.

Both are several hour drives. I am in the Chicago suburbs and there isn?t much in V8 mercruiser?s for sale around here.
There is a guy that has rebuilt Marine 350 but the ad says 87 -94 mercruiser, Volvo. What is the difference with motors 87 and newer?

Thanks in advance for any help. I spent all weekend doing head gaskets but that isn?t the problem.

You have a 350 Small Block Chevy engine, probably the most popular engine built.
Which cylinders have water in them?
Do you have water in the oil as well?

You might have bad exhaust manifold/risers that can leak into the cylinder.
Read this:

unfortunately... the OP never came back with results on what he did and that was 10-years ago, so that thread is long dead, but wanted to give you another possibility on you issue.

Where are they? I find them $1600 +shipping +extras I am guessing 2000.

I am trying to stay under $1000.

The fact that your water-in-cylinder issue is isolated to one side of the engine, it's safe to say the block is OK. You may be looking at just a bad exhaust manifold on that side, head gasket, or a cracked/corroded head. If the oil pressure is good when running and compression is OK in the other cylinders, I would repair it.

Id look into whats wrong with what ya got first....it could be just a bad riser to elbow gasket or rusted out manifold.....Pressure test the cooling system first.

Look in sticky's at the top of the forum...should have that info!

Ok, I disconnected the 3 hoses from the log style manifold and hung them in the bilge.
I ran the motor on muffs, no water in cylinders. If it were a cracked block or bad head gasket I would still get water in the cylinders? (I replaced the head gasket last weekend)

When I hooked up the 2 water lines to the manifold with the riser removed and the hose hanging in the bilge. I ran the motor there was water coming out of the square exhaust port on the manifold where the riser bolts on.
Then I blocked off the rear hose nipple and blew in the other (both ends of the log manifold)
Should I have pressure? When I block off on end and blow in the other I can hear air in the middle of the log inside what I think is the exhaust side of the manifold.
