Anyone know what this part is? or what its for?

A few months back, I purchased a 40 HP mercury outboard (electric start) which i'm putting on my little fishing boat, the guy I bought it from gave me the throttle/shifter unit that he had used with it, as well as the harness that he used for this outboard. along with everything he gave me came what ever this thing is. I just got done wiring the harness to the motor yesterday, but I don't see where this thing might go, and I definitely don't know what the heck it is :facepalm:

I'm going to test run the motor today and would like to make sure this is not something I need/should have to have connected before doing so.

can someone PLEASE tell me what this part might be, and what is used for????

They look like coils,but I could be wrong? Is there coils on the motor?

theres no doubt they are coils.spares?if not, without those your not firing up that baby.

you would be much better served in the mercury/mariner forum.good info to have handy also is year and model number.pictures are priceless also.if you can get a mod to move this to the merc/mariner section im sure the boys would be all over it like a fat kid on a free box of smarties.

not dumb douche bag, just a newbie trying to learn and get my boat underway.

on another note, I just found a diagram on this, and if im looking at it correctly, I do believe I see them already installed. so these must be spares.

As for what they are - no idea, I don't see anything that looks like that on your motor. Where are you seeing them? Do they have a part number on them?

I believe I see them slightly in post # 7 pic# 3 on the top right corner

To me they dont look like they are off that motor. They would be what the spark plug wire starts at (opposite of the plug). the coils. They are under the cowl support on your motor.

definitely looks like some coils off an older (pre-80's) merc.
