Those things are darned expensive, and I want to make a small one for my boat. Found that the hardware is available, but have not found a good supplier for aluminum tube and don't know what to use for the top material.

Any suggestions are appreciated!
Mark.

Steelworks.net will have the posts.
The SteelWorks Corporation
800-321-1115
800-322-7002 fax

You can use many types of material for the canopy as long as it is durable in the weather -- including sun. Here's one option: http://www.sunbrella.com/usa/consumer_marine.shtml

Re: Anyone make their own Bimini top?

I made a cheapie top. I used electrical conduit for frame tube. The boat had at one time had a canvas cabin and there was hardware for bimini frame. I used the gunwale mounts and cut the frame hardware from the old tubes. I made a new frame with the electrical conduit, I didn't bend the tubing, I used conduit connectors. For the cover, I used a cheap plastic tarp. I did install snaps along the front edge of the tarp, they fit into existing snaps on my windshield frame. The framework is held in place with rope. The tarp lays on the framework, snaps to the windshield and a single bungee cord from each rear corner holds the tarp in place. It worked extremely well at lower speeds and kept the sun off very well.

Improvements I will make. I will sew a sleeve for the frame tubes to slide into. Would like to make the top open over the pilot station so that I can stand to pilot.

Overall cost $20.

My friend has an awning company and made a top for my boat. He has all the equipment and it was not as easy as it's looks.

It was worth a pro doing it!

bob

I haven't made my own bimini top, nor have I tried. One of my very best friends is a boater, and owned an awning company, he buys his bimini tops, says it's the most cost effective way.

Ed,

I did use the search engine. You're informative posts did not show because they are in the general boating questions forum, and me and probably all the other folks are searching in boat building/projects forum.

Thanks for steering me to the info.

Mark.
