what makes a good cheap one? I've used my 7 ft. oars, but they tend to stick in the mud.

Bowfin

I've thought about it...

Every so often I'll have the "honor" of replacing someones old fiberglass SSB antenna or a vhf antenna with an extention on it... Usually as an afterthough i'll be thinking, "dang, why'd I throw that away...with a little attention and some epoxy, that'd make a good push pole"...

Depending on the size of the boat and weight.
I've used PVC and it works ok for lighter boats. I used 2" 12' long with a cap on one end and a Tee on the other end with 6" sticking past either side and capped. Before you finish it and cap it off, fill it with "great stuff" Foam. It expands and will stiffen the pole some.
--Hop

I use 1 1/4" pvc with a 1" wooden dowl inside
cap on one end pointed well cap on the other. pvc comes in 20' long.
