I've waited patienty for almost 6 years to really begin living vicariously through my son :) I've got us a go-cart and that's fun and all, but now I have cast my eye on an RC boat. I'm pretty sure I want nitro, just so I don't have to mess with batteries. Traxxas has a nice one with a deep V hull that looks pretty good. Anyone have an RC boat or know what to look for?

I own several RC boats. 2 are nitro, 2 are electric. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. I have an airboat and a regular "prop" boat.

I use my electric as a "rescue boat" incase the engine dies on the airboat. Just wedge the nose under the engine mount and push it in. It works great.

COOL; Can you run those on regular lake chop? Our do you need smooth glass?

A slight chop is better, they are offshore styled boats beween 24-32" long, but nothing too crazy rough, the top picture of the white Jet Arrow boat 26" long is upper Greenwood lake.

Sweet. Hey, if you put SmartTabs on them you could get that bow down at lower speeds...:D

Brings back memories of my old RC boat days!!

I once ran mine in foot high white caps and after 3 runs I split the hull from bow to stern. I was lucky to get it back. The radio died as I was trying to get it back to the dock and it started going down as I reached into the water to grab it.

WOW!! If I could afford another hobby I'd buy one right now! For 2 years I raced slot cars with my oldest son. It cost more money than you would think,[if you wanted to be competitive]but was some of the best quality time I ever had with either of my boys!!!

That's pretty funny, my wife is 8 weeks pregnant with our first and we are already looking at toys that we want to play with.

Re: Anyone own an RC boat?

Anyone see the Malcom in the Middle episode where Hal finds and old RC boat in the garage and rebuilds it. The first time he takes it to the pond some lil dorky kid with a speed boat plows his lil boat over. This happens a few times before Malcom helps him. They devise a boat where they sucker the boy into open water. Hal pushes a button and his boat transforms like Knight Rider into a faster boat. The faster boat didn't help and the punk kid capsizes Hal's boat. The kid laughs and mocks. Hal finally hit one last button where the boat opens up and a torpedo launches out and blows up the boys boat. Quite funny. I've been in situations where I would love to do something like that! LOL.

Ok, I've cleared this with the better half - in October as a B-day gift, I'm presenting my son with a Traxxas Nitro Vee. It comes well regarded from a durability standpoint and has some nice features that makes it appealing to novices.

I just wish I didn't have to wait 2 mos!

Good Choice to get started with if you're into nitro boats, get a 42mm brass prop to replace the original one for a boost in speed.

Re: Anyone own an RC boat?

That is something I've been wanting to get into. I want to build my own using a 4 stroke weedeater engine hooked to a water pump for the jet drive. That way I don't have to worry about the grandkids an the prop. It will come in handy dropping off my bait/hook in the areas that you cannot get your big boat into.

I haven't made my mind up on what style to go with. I most likely want to design it to look like one of those Coast Guard boats that are self righting. I'm thinking that maybe a plus.

I did RC planes once. I had more repair time than I did air time. It was fun while it lasted.

Like dlngr I was into slot cars for a couple of years. I had 3 cars for each class, fancy controllers, and too many speeding tickets on the way home from the races. :D Yeah, that is a hobby that can make ones wallet thinner quicker than you think. Especially if you are competitive. Its hard to eat those trophies when your hungry :D I gave all my cars and equipment away last Christmas for a charity event. The kid that got them was tickled pink. The punk kid has broken the times I set at the track we raced. Go figure?
