Anyone removed a VP ocean series drive?

Hi Guys-
New here.

This will be the first season I am removing the XDP Ocean Series drive myself.

First question is does anyone know the size of the torx bolts holding it onto the bell housing?

An answer to this question and any other pointers would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Re: Anyone removed a VP ocean series drive?

either the merc hinge pin tool or a piece of 1/2" hex stock works, cut off a piece of a 1/2" allen wrench.
unbolt the shift cable bracket, the aft end of the bellows, the water tube, remove the trim cyl aft anchor, unplug the remote oil tank line and its about ready to remove.
some XDP units have two exhaust tubes that must be removed, the later units did not.

Below is a link to download the OEM service manual for the XDP drive. May help a little. Sorry to hear you are stuck with one of those, and trust me when I say that I wouldn't own anything but a Volvo engine and DP drive system on a boat with an outdrive.

Keep your bellows dry, and good luck.

and if you have the ocean X series there are a few other sensors that need to be looked at.

The manual will tell you to hang the outdrive using a lifting eye....no way to get that done under my boat! The swim platform is in the way....

I'll look through my notes. I have done it several times, for twin XDPs. Last winter I did it by myself! It really is a two-man job.

Anyhow, you will need the 1/2" hex Allen key.

Here is a thread showing how it can be done...

Hey you guys are the best!

In the spring, for sure, I will hit you up again asking about installing the drive, LOL

May be I can put my notes and pictures together and have Don can post them for reference...

By the way, there is a Volvo Penta "Dear John" type of letter for XDP owners being mailed out...it gives information on the service and support for the discontinued drives...

Here it is...

Hmmm.. Interesting.. I haven't received such a letter. I have owned this boat since new (2005 270 Rinker Fiesta Vee). Volvo did the recall work in 2009. Really no issues with this drive (praying, it stays that way)

You really should get the correct "Torx Bit" for the bolt.

I know the bolts that hold that drive on shouldn't be all that tight, but having stripped a torx on a CV joint using the wrong type "bit" and then having a REALLY hard time getting it out, I use the "right one" now.....

You probably should use the correct tool to prevent that.

They don't cost all that much and since you're going to do it frequently, the bolts will last MUCH longer.

And which T-size torx do you use? They come in various T sizes or metric...

I don't see a 1/2" torx bit sold anywhere....I don't think this hinge pin is a torx, it looks more like a double hex. The 1/2" hex fits perfectly.

Re: Anyone removed a VP ocean series drive?

cause its not not not A TORX fastener. its a 12pt female cap screw,
thats why either the 12pt tool from merc or a hex 1/2" allen works.
over the years I have broken and stripped both tools.
usually trying to use them after they have really passed the service life of the tool.
and yes they torque to about 120 Ft pounds on the XDP and they have loctite on them as well.

Re: Anyone removed a VP ocean series drive?

Well, thanks to help from you guys I was able to get the drive off today.

Really not that difficult. I used the 1/2 hex (1/2 drive) socket and the bolts came off pretty easily. No way did they feel like 120 lbs of torque was used to put them on. Thinking the last mechanic who installed them used maybe 60 to 75 lbs.

What made it pretty easy was I used a motorcycle jack propped up on the sides with various sized dimensional lumber. I had my brother there helping but I came to realize with the jack I probably could have done the job without help.

Getting the drive back on seems to be a little more complicated but I will deal with that in the spring.

I wanted to ask you guys should there be any water at all in the bellows? (thinking not). I found trace amounts, maybe the amount of 1 or 2 eyedroppers full. Then I realized there should probably be some sealant applied to the part where the bellows get's clamped on both ends. Do you guys use a sealant? and what kind?

There's a few reasons why I fired my boat mechanic for one noone is going to care about my boat more than I will.

Yeah, getting them off isn't much of a problem if they aren't stuck with rust and corrosion. Putting them back on is the fun part, see you in the spring ;)
