I have an old '61 Seahorse 10 laying in my boathouse. I was just planning to take it to a scrap yard. If anyone out there is still running one of those engines they should PM me.

Whatever you do, don't take it to the scrap yard. There are some fairly valuable parts in there. The updated (for then) pistons and rods, for example. And the gearcase, if it isn't worn out.

If you want to sell it, place a free ad on the Antique Outboard Club's website, www.aomci.org

I agree - if you sell it as an intact motor, you'll get a lot more for it than you would for mixed-metal scrap value.

Where abouts are you located? I have always wanted a 10hp. I have a 5.5hp, 7.5hp and 18hp. This would complete the set!

The engine is located at my Cabin near Salmon Arm, British Columbia, Canada and I'm located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The things are a bit heavy as you know so could be a bit expensive to ship somewhere but it might not be so expensive as to not be worthwhile considering.

The motor is pretty much intact except the flywheel and recoil starter are off of it. I still have those parts though. I have the cowl as well but I think the bits on the side that said Johnson Seahorse 10 are missing, at least on one side. The leg/gearcase is still good and the engine could probably be made to run again with some work. My guess is that it was probably winterized the last time it was used which was in 1977 when we replaced it with a brand new '77 Evinrude 9.9 which I still have today. I know it was running when we mothballed it but it wasn't running well so that's why my Mother told my Dad he better not show up at the cabin again without a new motor for the tin boat. Dad dutifully complied, wisely opting to avoid the wrath of my somewhat intimidating Mom... ;-)

That engine is certainly a treasure. DO NOT PART IT OUT !!! go to AOMCI web site to find everything you need to know about them

ALL those oldies are great engine IF they had minimal TLC... (o?l) Inside of them .

I have restored several back to life (5.5, a 7.5 a 10. a 15, couple of 3hp, a 4hp a 3.9 Merc etc...

you can get these back to life for less money that the tax dollars on a new modern engine and probably run it another 50 years on cheap available parts !! with modern synthetic oils and biodegradable like xd-100 they won't pollute as much

Old style ignition coil were the main issue because the resins cracked ....modern ones solve the problem and only cost 25$ a piece (2 needed) with new points, condenser and impeller to be safe

if you have no interest in bringing it back to life, you should offer it on kijiji etc for $30 as a project motor. thats more than scrap value so the metal hoarders wont take it and it at least it might have a chance to be on a lake again. jmo

I have had the motor brought back from my cabin and will now post something about it on the aomci website to see if I can find someone who will take it and restore it back to its former glory. It'll be interested to see how much interest there will be on it.

Thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion and encouraged me not to scrap it and to instead make it available to the vintage outboard community. Hopefully, it will find a good home there.

Just finished posting it on the AOMCI forums. Here's a link to my Photobucket album with tons of pictures of it.

Haven't had any interest on aomci so far and it's been over a week. 172 views to the ad and not one expression of interest. I'm thinking I'll give it another week and if still no one wants it then I'll either take it to a metal recycler or part it out and sell it off piecemeal on eBay. That seems like such a shame because I'm basically trying to give it away, the motor is complete and I think all it would need is a new coil and a tune-up and it would probably run great. But if no one wants it, no one wants it and I have to start getting rid of some of my clutter.

It is a shame nobody wants it. My introduction to outboards was bringing a 1961 10 HP Johnson back to life. Didn't really take much; new fuel pump (If I am not mistaken the '61 was the first year that they introduced the fuel pump to the 10 HP), new points/condensers, impeller, a coil and a carb cleanup. I can still remember the thrill I had when I put it in a barrel and started it up on the fourth pull. I actually did a victory lap around the back yard! If I could find a way to reasonably ship it from where you are at, I would get it, if for nothing else than just for the sense of nostalgia and that feeling I had bringing my first outboard back to life!

Happy ending. An AOMCI member gave me the names and addresses of 2 AOMCI members from my city. I called the first one who lives less than a mile from me and he came right over and took the motor. He says's he's going to get it running again and then eventually restore it to its former glory. The guy has about 25 antique outboards in his collection so is obviously knowledgeable and passionate about restoring vintage outboards.

I'm so glad to see it go to a good home and to know it'll have a life again as a working outboard.

Thanks to all who helped and encouraged me to keep searching for a new owner.
