Re: anyone try biodeisel

My father makes bio diesel for his John Deere tractor. Depending on how it's made and what it is made with, it gels up in the winter time. He was running bio in the tractor for a while until it turned cold then the tractor wouldn't run. He drained the tank and replaced the filter and refilled the tank with diesel and it started up with no problems. He put the bio in again it ran for a while then quit yet again. There are several things to be cautious of when making and using this bio. We originally got the idea of making bio from a man that has been making it for years, he has been running it in his vehicles. Dad's been getting the cooking oil from a Chinese resteraunt and yes when you run the tractor on bio you can smell a hint of egg rolls from the exhaust. You can not light that stuff on fire either, if you poor it on the ground and light a piece of cloth on fire and throw it on the bio the cloth will just sit there and burn like a candle.

Are you wanting to see about making this for yourself?

I was curious if you had thoughts of making it, just thought I would ask.

Before following through with making it for yourself (even if further down the road), I would price the chemicals and methanol first. A 55 gallon drum of methanol can cost about $250, but it is supposed to make several batches of bio.

Faulty fuel from the gas station is possible, just like water in gas, if you find somebody pumping the mix ask them how well it has been doing for them, if they are regular users of it.

The tractor I mentioned earlier fired right up on straight bio diesel during the warm weather with no problems. I personally don't know the method of mixing it, I didn't want to have much to do with it because I felt like I was going to it blown up while processing it lol. It really is a simple process to make it from what I understand for real.

A friend of mine makes his own. His LC60 runs nicely on it, and yes, all the things you mentioned are true. Cleaner, greener, cheaper :D. If I could find a restaurant who isn't already sell his oil to someone else, I'd be making my own too. With the cost of the chemicals it works out about 35c a litre (current pump price here for 'normal' diesel is $1.50/l )

You use about 20% methanol, so a 55 gallon drum will make you 275 gallons of bio. The only dangerous part is using KOH. Pretty nasty stuff, so be careful.

We use bio diesel on the farm. It's mandated in MN. I'm not sure of the blend. No problems in summer but it does gel up in winter quicker. The engines run on it OK in the winter but, the fuel filters on the fuel barrel plug up. So, my advice is to not worry about it in summer but be a little careful with it in winter.

Also, all diesel will grow a mold that can cause problems. For some reason bio diesel has a slightly bigger problem with this. If your fuel station is a good one they treat the fuel with a mold killer and it does not cause any problems.

The old thing they have saying about diesel for years it still rings true "Buy clean fuel and keep it clean".

We are using B12 because that is where the tax breaks kick in. In the winter, if you can, you should mix it back up before putting it in the engine. We run the hose back into the tank for a little bit before filling up.

We've been using bio diesel for over 6 years. Stated with B2, then went to B5, we're now using B15. No gelling problems yet, but it is treated with anti- gelling additives. It helps keep our old diesel engines alive, with the added lubricity.

well i think ill wait a couple months to try it. in north dakota it gets really damn cold i think ill start out with b5 and see how it acts and go up from there i think b20 is the highest concentration i can get around here from the pump. and ihave to meany projects taking up room to start biulding my own diesle refinery. iv been reading that you can set up your own operation and make bio diesel for about 50-60 mpg. right now im getting about 20 mpg at current gas prices being 2.98 per gallon and diesel at 3.38 per gallon that works out to roughly the cost equevelet to 17-18 mpg of a gas engin ( i dident acualy do the math just a rough estemite) if i were to make my own diesel fuel at .60 cents per gallon it would be one cost effective truck
