I think that would be suicide, Charlie.

Even if you survive, I doubt that the truck, and maybe even the boat, would survive.

My buddy towed with his 22re 4x4 for 132K miles befor retiring it. He towed a starcraft that tipped the scales at 2000lbs.
His truck was a stickshift and he fishes at least 3-4 days a week all year around.
When He retired the old truck it was on its second clutch. Towed fine, stopped fine, But coming out of the ramp with the boat he always used 4LO and idled out.
He replaced the boat with a crestliner 1850 and the truck with another toyota tacoma but this one is a 4X4 V-6 with a stick.
I think your boat is to much for that truck.
Good luck

Funny you should ask.

I have a 2002 Taco with the 4cyl and 5 speed. (2 wheel drive). Just yesterday I tried towing with it. I have a 15' Thunderbird Tri-Hull with a 85 Merc. It was just me and a friend, and minimal gear.

Around town it's OK...but it just wheezes bad on the mountain pass around here. I had to go into second gear at times just to maintain 35-40 mph. Obviously not satisfactory.

Performance at the ramp was surprisingly good by comparison.

I'm in the market for a more powerful truck.

Thanks for reading, Chuck

I'm easier going than some of the guys on the board when it comes to towing. But unless you are driving a matter of yards to a boat ramp, there is no way you will be able to tow that. I feel the most a good four cylinder can handle is around 2,200 lbs, in town. You will need at least a 3.5 liter or larger V6 with at least 200 h.p. to begin to tow a 21 ft. boat.

Your boat and trailer probably weigh more than 4,000 lbs.

First gear achieves a whole lot of torque, even if you have a four cylinder engine. On a boat ramp, you may be able to go up at only 3 mph, but the car can easily do it from the torque provided from first gear. You would be surprised.

The problem occurs when you want to go faster.

i know the bumper says 3500 lbs.
It's pretty simple, really.

1. Read the owner's manual to find the vehicle's tow rating. It's not on the bumper.

2. Get the boat and trailer weighed at a public scale. You may need to have a friend tow it there and back.

3. Compare the boat/trailer weight to the manufacturer's tow rating for the vehicle. If it's equal or less, you can tow it. If it's more, you really shouldn't unless you're towing a very short distance (such as to a community ramp).

OK, Toyota's Towing guide at the dealership says 3500lbs Max for your truck so I would say no. I am guessing the others are right in saying your boat is probably 4-5000lbs.

Mike M.
