I was just wondering how well this engine pushes a boat in the 18foot range. I have an 1860 triton aluminum all welded, and am ready to buy a new engine. I noticed that the yahmaha has a smaller dissplacement than any other 90hp on the market. I went around actually talking to mechanics this weekend and was pretty much told that yamaha is the motor to have for reliability. I am still looking at johnson, however I may not need any more power than what the yamaha provides, and if that is so, I will go with the yamaha for reliability. All of the mechanics told me that the yamaha would be better on fuel and have all the power I would need. They also said that the johnson was more powerfull, but that the prices for parts since bombardier took over are through the roof. Who knows, I am as confused as an infant in a tiddy bar!! Any ways, if you have an 1860 or similar, and youre pushing it with a yamaha 90hp, how do you like the power? Thanks Bill

Triton, I just bought new 04 90 hp Yamaha 2 stroke. It has been a good engine so far. This is my first outboard since I had an I/O for 2 yrs. I just put 21 hours on it. I can't complain. reliability and longevity are excellent according to its history. You will be able to reach between 35 and 40mph,(on my 17ft) on wot. There are lot of good guys on this board who have had more expereince than me in running those type of outboards, who can give you more substantial input. Good luck.
