i have a 1993 johnson 50hp, it has no reverse and foreward was starting to loose its bite, so i took off the LU and attempted to dismantle it find out what exactly is worn. ive since broken 5 1/4x20x8in bolts with a bolt puller trying to get the bearing carrier out. the last straw came when one of the bolts snapped flush with the top of the bearing carrier. ive since discovered i can get a new LU on ebay for 400, this would be worth my time and probably save me on parts. but the one for sale is for a short shaft. i have a long shaft. my question is... is it possible to swap out the shift rod and drive shaft from my current LU, and put it on the new LU without having to take out the bearing carriers on either?
In the event that the carriers must absolutly come off does anyone have a recommendadtion to get a bearing carrier out that absolutly doesnt want to budge? would putting heat on it help?

Any time you start breaking bolts be prepared to use the blue wrench(torch). I heat a carrier just a little every time I repair one, and have only had 3 or 4 in 20 + years I couldnt get out, but I got em later by splitting housing. Never been beat by one yet!!! :D(Knock on wood!!):D Your shafts will fit the ebay unit but you still got to pull carrier to get pinion nut off..:(
