I'm installing the 1409 carb onto a 1986 mercruiser 260. Will all the throttle bracket and flame arrester work from my quadrajet?

Throttle bracket and flame arrester should work. Fuel line will need to be changed. I assume you already have a squarebore to spreadbore adapter.

Throttle bracket won't work if i remember right, need to order one from Mercury for the later engine that uses the Weber carb, flame arrestor fine, fuel line will need changed correctly, NOT cobbled with dime store automotive fuel line!

Edelbrock makes a fuel line "relocation kit" which brings the fuel inlet connection from the left rear of the carb to the front left of the carb, with a fuel filter included. It's relatively inexpensive (less than $50) and makes life a lot easier.

Looking on mercruiserparts.com, he missed it by a year.

The '87 260 parts list shows the same bracket being used for both weber and quadrajet. There are two different ones, stamped steel vs cast, but used on both qjet and weber. The '86 260 shows only a cast one, but it is a different part number than '87 cast one. That "probably" means it is not a direct fit.

ZB, do you remember what the obstruction was? Is it something that can be ground off? or easily modded?

On the other hand, the stamped steel part number is the same as what I use and has been swaped back and forth on oth style carbs.

That would be a great option. Is it CG approved for boats? I wasn't able to quickly find it on a 10min google search.

John, how did your tuning work out on this? I just put a 1409 on my 1987 230hp and it doesnt seem to want to quite get all the way up to speed. 4800 WOT with the Q-jet, 4400 on the Edelbrock. The Edelbrock idles beautifully in comparison.

Re: anything else needed when installing a 1409 carb?

toeskis, i had the same issue with my 1409 (on an 87 260 w/quadrajet)....just fiddled with the mixture a little and hit 4900 no problem

as far as fuel lines, your local shop should carry a CG approved 23" braided line that should reach down to the fuel pump. the only mod i needed was a 120 degree elbow at the fuel pump. with the 23" line, i was still a bit short to the carb, and the few extra inches got rid of the slight kink in the line.

I have only done a few wot runs due to lake conditions. But, I am getting around 4800 @ wot, and about 57-58 mph gps, with my 5.7 vortec. The Q-jet was about the same. I haven't changed any rod, jets, or springs yet.

PS: I tried a 1409 for a short period about 2 years ago, and it did not seem to do as well as the Q-jet. I was dealing with fuel presure and maybe even T5 advance problems then.

PSS: Is there enough room in Bradley Brook to make wot runs? ;)

Re: anything else needed when installing a 1409 carb?

I just botat the relocation kit and the fuel pump -to- carb hose kit that comes pre-made for your engine. You can cut lines and mess with fittings if you like, but I went the easy route and got the pre-sized SS-braided lines from edelbrock (russel automotive) so there's no cuttingng involved. I can send you pics of how I did the throttle brakcet if you like, as I had to custom make a bracket to hold the throttle cable stud.

I'm not sure if you still need the pics, lime, but here they are. Sorry for the delay, I have been working on the boat and forgot to snap a pic or two.

Front of engine with carb, fuel relocation kit/filter/ss-hose to fuel pump:

Engine in boat, with throttle bracket/cable installed. Bracket is just a piece of angle aluminum I got from Lowe's for about $10.

Shot from rear of engine installed in boat, you can see the bracket a bit better.

Sorry for those of you with image size complaints . . . get a modern monitor. :)
