Apache J8; need info please

Bought a Clinton Apache model J8 off ebay. Coil, points and condensor look fine. Sparkplug is bad and is marked H-10J which is what my "old outboard book" says it should have. I can't find that plug anywhere and a sparkplug website says the Clinton J8 model uses a RH12 or H12 plug. Also the mixture on the external tank says use 1/2 pint of oil per gallon. Does anyone know if this is correct and the horsepower of this motor? Thanks in advance. This is my 3rd project motor, the first was a 1953 7.5hp Evinrude Fastwin and 2nd was just a Sears gamefisher.

Re: Apache J8; need info please

Hi Pardner<br />Please keep in mind that the info I have is from an older after market manual. There may be some differences. My book lists your Clinton Apache J8 as a 1958 5HP model. I also have Champ. J12J gapped @ .025 listed as the correct plug. I have two sorces that list this. Actually one gives .030 gap. This book also recomends 1/2 pint oil per gal of gas for the break in period and the 1/4 pint there after. I personaly would stick to the 1/2 pint to the gal or no less than 25:1. Use 90wt gear oil for the L/U. I believe that the Champ J12J is still available. I feel these type motors do better with more oil. They should smoke a bit. Be careful not to lean the carb out to the nth degree. Tune for good power but leave a little for smoke. You will not foul plugs at 25:1 or even a 1/2 pint to the gal (16:1?) unless the carb is adjusted too rich. A lot of fellas figure this plug problem is a fuel\oil deal. Nope, it's an air fuel deal, (given everything else is in line). One other detail on this fuel\oil ratio deal. A lot of times a manufacturer will give a ratio such as 25:1 and then turn around a say mix 1/2 pint to the gal. The reason for this is to save us, the operators, the head ache of a math problem. It makes things simple. 1\2 pint equals 1cup. And everybody has a measuring cup or some way to measure 8ozs. So to error on the fat side with the oil is no big deal (with in reason of course). You will have to play with the plug gap for your self, .025 or .030 or some where in the middle. My feeling is the .030 will work best, I really don,t know. Good luck.

Re: Apache J8; need info please

Thanks for you reply Alcan. I still don't get spark with the new plug and do not even get jolted by holding onto the plug when cranking. Just our of curiosity I put a screwdriver in the boot and spun the flywheel a turn or so and was jolted pretty good. The coil looks great with no cracks so I'm going to try and pick up points and condensor tomorrow. I'll post any new results. Thanks again for the info.

Re: Apache J8; need info please

Well, I took the points and condensor with me to work to day so I could order replacements. I got home and put the parts back in and eyeballed the points gap and it started right up. I couldn't remember what the adjustments for the high and lowspeed idle were so I backed the highspeed jet out 1.5 from bottom and the lowspeed 1 from bottom. It ran rough and wouldn't stay running but I noticed that all the gas lines were leaking, it has a single line external tank. I put hose clamps on all the lines and it now runs like a top. Thanks for all the help Alcan and IBOATS.....!!!!!
