I have a gear oil leak in the lower part of the outdrive where the water intake is. Its a slow leak but its getting worse and worse. Is this a common problem and what parts will I need to fix it?

Thanks!

Re: Apha Gear Oil Leak?

there is a small grommet that goes between the upper and lower housing. If the seal is bad oil will leak into the lower unit.

This needs to be replaced each time you replace your impeller

Yeah, that?s what I'm hoping it is... your referring to the seal that connects the gear oil reservoir to the lower unit correct?
When I changed the impeller in the spring I reused the old O-ring because I didn't get one with the impeller kit, so that is the likely problem.

yep, that's the one...just like every other seal or gasket, you need to replace them once they are removed. that little grommet/seal gets pressed pretty tight and is junk once you split the halves.

How much oil is coming out of the intake on the lower?

yeah most def. the little seal for the oil passage from lower to upper. So you'll have to drain the oil, pop her into gear and drop the lower unit. This can be done without fully removing the drive if you're crafty. Then fill up with new oil, from the bottom with the vent plug out

You dont even need to be crafty to do it without removing the drive. Just remove the lower unit. I would also look at the lower shift shaft bushing. Its another common leak spot.

As far as doing it without draining the oil. NO. You have a suspected leak at where the upper and lower gearcase meet. Seperate the two and you'll lose most of your gear oil anyway. Besides if you are leaking oil there is a good chance water is getting in there ruining everything. Gear oil is cheap.

So I changed the O-ring that connects the lower and upper unit oil passage but it's still leaking from the water intake... Anyone else have any suggestions on what seal is leaking?

You will need to pressure test the drive to find the leak. If its a seal, you will probably have to have a pro replace them all.

I agree. I'm taking her to a merc tech tomorrow. Gonna get the gimbel bearing and bellows replaced the same time.

as long as your removing the lower unit, go ahead and reseal everything, incl the oil carrier seal, and water pump gaskets.
