The only solution is to make a madatory background check of all persons transporting radioactive materials when they enter, or ban the import alltogether.

Ken

That & how about all transfers of nuclear material entering/leaving be accompanied/supervised by the military personnel?
The transfer of nuclear material should be difficult, with many hoops to jump through....
This is one time I find myself in favor of 'red tape'....JK

No it isn't Darth, and the current action in the Senate is nothing but window dressing as well.

I don't think we have to worry about somebody trying to destroy us from without... it appears we are going to do it ourselves from within.

Move over Jessie and Al, you about to be replaced by the new minorities... "undocumented immigrants" and their coalition leaders.

What could possibly be wrong with having people in our country with a tamper proof card? It would be enable our security people to make help make sure that there no are bad guys sneaking in.
That and a few hundred plus miles of well-patrolled border fence, plus sanctions on the hiring of the no longer illegals, would be a good place to start.Who knows the ones that come in might even be making more dough.

Re: Apparently our borders remain as porous as ever

I see two entirely unrelated issues here;

1. Stop illegal crossings of our borders and prevent smuggling of materials of any kind. This is a National Security problem and must not be complicated by issue 2.

2. What to do about the many millions already here who have no legal right to be here. This is a social and economic issue as well as a legal problem. They may be as much as 5% of our population!

Many many years of ineffective enforcement of our borders (lack of solution to problem 1) have created problem 2. We now have a significant portion of our society and our economy under the RADAR. We don't know who they are, where they are or how many they are. They contribute to our economy with work and some taxes, like sales taxes, road taxes, property taxes and other "anonymous" taxes, but they are mostly invisible to the census and federal taxes. They use a significant portion of public services provided by Federal taxes.

By allowing some of them temporary documentation we can get a handle on who and where they are and can allow orderly immigration of more temporary guest workers essential to a significant portion of our economy.

Dreams of arresting and deporting all of them are just that: pipe dreams. Even if we could do that we have no replacement workforce to assume the jobs they do.

Back to issue 1.: We can't have one law to deal with our border with Mexico and a different one for our coasts and Canada. This is a baby and bathwater problem that I don't think anyone has thought through properly.

Something is needed and needed now. I think changing the tokenism of enforcement to full enforcement, immediately, is the right move.

It looks to me like all Congress is going to do is grandstand in preparation of the upcoming mid-term elections.

But.....But.... could we not put back to work the people these people put on the unemployment line?

I always did think to do for Americans first, then if there is anything left, do for others.
I guess that's why I would not make a good politician.

Re: Apparently our borders remain as porous as ever

My two cents

Past administrations both republicans and democrats created this mess, there are too many inconsistencies in the immigration laws, the bar should be the same for anyone and everyone who would like to come and make a better life for themselves in this great land.
Presently there are one set of rules just for Cubans which do not apply to Mexicans, rules for Africans which do not apply to europeans, rules for West Indians which do not apply to Asians. There are millions of illegal immigrants who have "American" children and grandchildren that were born and are being schooled in this country. This is a huge mess that will take many many years of squabbling and grandstanding by those elected to work for we people.
I sincerely doubt that this is something that our elected lawyers can or will ever sort out. :(

Spinner I agree 100%. The problem is, there is still a large number who simply find it easier to suck on the mamories of the government sow than go to work.

Just more proof that whenever the government attempts to solve a problem, they end up creating 10 more.

Re: Apparently our borders remain as porous as ever

mmm let me think, I am gonna walk or hop a train from central america, most likly getting robbed of any money or food to get to the mexican border only to die in the arozonia dessert.
now I am gonna do this strictly to suckle the federal teat.
what a crock.

a better immigration policiy would be to re write CAFTA and NAFTA and but some teeth bones in them.
the way its written insures incredible poverty and suffering in mexico and south america, if a person gets desperate enough they will head north.
US policy, drivin by biddness intrests have raped mexico and central america,
thats why our manufacturing and Assembly plants as well as textiles have all headed south. no pay,no bennies, no worker protections cheap slave labor no environmental laws and no enforcement on the feebles ones in place and the US CEO makes a killing and the corperate bottom line looks good.
in most mexican, hondouran and even chinese labor"camps" if a machine bites off a workers arm the worker is fired, no workmans comp, no unemployment and not even severance pay. in some cases if the machine was damaged the workers last check is witheld to offset the damage to company property.
not a man or woman posting on this board would do any different than most the illegals currently heading north.
no amount of fences, dogs or border guards are gonna slow it down.
just aint gonna happen.
most posters here I really dont think have ever gone south and seen poverty, we have NO poverty in the states.
we may have poor folk, they have poverty.
that getto homey in NY or the bum in san fran may not have much but odds are good they wont starve, in central and south america starvation is a daily reality.
most americans I chat with have no clue how conditions are outside the US border and assume its just like the US. well folks its not.
we gotta get intern chasers and cocaine cowboys out of our govt and get somebody in that can address the issue.
while enforcement of or current laws would have been nice ,and its all clintons fault for the lax enforcement the past 6 years, enforcement alone wont help and will become very costly.
I read an article by the US Immigration that said if they accepted no more applications and reviews this year they would not finnish processing the current backlog until about 2015.
thats just not acceptable or as acceptable as 5% container screening or the fact the US owns less than .1% of the maritime container shipping.
so unless the US bucks big money and writes a rade policy that will force compliance as well as allow the US worker to compete its gonna continue I dont care who is the current postuing buffoon.
its been illegal to hire non-documented workers since I entered the workforce in the 70's.
however I have worked in various machine shops and factories beside non-citizens that were in the US illegally since the 70's.my payenvelope had a check with the amounts of various deductions, theirs contained a stack of bills.
I was working a machine shop in the Ft Worth area and immigration showed up, the shop went from about 40 to 5 and us 5 were chasing about shutting off machines while the other 35 or so were headed out the back towards the wood line. was a comman occurence yet that shop never paid a dime in fines.
each and every border patrol agent costs me and you 100,000 dollars a year or so to train, equip, insure and pay their salary. in 20 years they will be on the permmanant public dole at age 55 or so. by the time they die each of us will have paid over 1 million dollars to each agent.
yep thats what we need is 500 more agents and the attendant beurocracy that goes with it.
dont ya think it would be better to rewrite the trade policy to maybe keep more cash there than funnel it back to the corperate headquaters and take away the incentive to brave a dessert border crossing?
they are just like us, lazy.
however unlike us they are gonna starve to death unless they head north and they know it, desperation drives it not the desire to leave family and friends for a cakewalk through the mexican and US desert.just like standing watch on a ship, once you assume the watch it does not matter who left the magazine door unlocked its the watchstanders responsibility,
the current administration has been an incredible failure both pre and post 9/11. its been nothing but posturing, spinning and self flagellation.
the current administartion is shaping up to go down in history as the worst yet.
you freemarket folks are funny to watch, today I installed a trim harness and two relays on a 1998 EFI 150 merc. any guesses were the parts were ASSEMBLED? a hint, Fun Do Lack was not on the package. so until we reighn in big business the problems will continue to grow, more folks will die and middle class america will suffer and pay for that CEO's aruban or panamainian condo.
I urge each and every one of you to step outside the US border to the south and see for yourself.
its terrible how corperate greed driven US policy has wiped out thousands and is accelerating.
this is not gleaned from FOX or CNN but from direct observation of a very small part of the outconus places I have been so far.
you can call them illegals, spics, wetbacks or whatever derogatory you wish, it does not negate the fact they are human beings and live, love, bleed and die just like every other human on the planet regardless of skin color or place of birth. or at least thats what the king james version says, unless the king james version only applies to white persons of european descent. if so excuse my mis interpetation.
trust me, the average honduran or mexican or south american would gladly stay home if they could actually live. the weather is wonderful year round, hurricanes are rare and you dont need walls cause its always warm. the fishing is outrageous, the closer to the equator you get the less the amount of daylight changes the hunting is spactacular. yep I would leave all that for a 1500 mile trek through the unknown to a place I could not speak the language with everything I owned in a back pack so I could suckle a public teat.
most folks I know wont walk 4 blocks to the 7-11 to pick up another 12 pack much less walk 1000 miles to get a 4 dollar an hour job with absolutly no worker protections or medical insurance.
think about it the next time you see a polititian flagellate.
