Hello all...I have a 2004 30 HP Johnson Tiller and am considering paying a mechanic to replace the impeller. Approx. how much should it cost to have this done? If it is too much I will do it myself with the appropriate manual.

Thanks

Getting a service manual is a good idea. Also, the OEM water pump kit comes complete with instructions how to do the job. Not hard at all and only requires basic tools.

Buy the OEM manual and do it yourself, and by doing that you will have a free manual.

About how much time does it take to change it out? I have never worked on an outboard, and it would probably take more time for me to do the job than some of you seasoned outboard owners.

Thanks

The first time I did mine it was close to say 2 hours...and I was taking my time..cleaned it up alot...changed gear oil....if I was to do it now...it would be under a hour.....The OMC OEM kit has all the instruction in the box....

the thing that got me was the black plastic ferrule...did not know how to get it off..then I found out it has a split in it....just open with fingernail and remove it...I REPEAT DO NOT DROP THIS OR THE TOP SHIFT SHAFT NUT IN THE WATER>>>>Lol....

Re: Approx. Price to Replace Impellor

Should be around $40 if there are no impeller vanes missing, and the water pump casing, liner, and base plate are in good shape.
If impeller vanes are missing a good mechanic will remove the head and thermostat to look for the missing water pump vane parts. In that case should be around $80-$100 bucks.

Just a side note, Price goes up corresponding with HP.....

Here in town, an hour of labour by an outboard mechanic at a shop is $85+.
