Please be gentle ;0)

Getting an olllld vanguard sidewinder (previous owner decided it needed to be I/O) up and running for a week of camping / boating

Got the thing running pretty well but have come up with a couple issues from it sitting for too long I think.

250 leg - lift motor will not raise the leg - only getting a click when I hit the switch - it always did labour to lift and needed a hand to get fully up - now it's gone downhill fast - are both of the relays just relays (can I just swap a standard bosch relay in there to test) or do i need to go oem - is there any "usual" suspect that commonly causes this issue?

aq 130 - suddenly developed an oil leak right under what I believe is an oil cooler? (the filter is screwed into it and it has a tube shaped reservoir looking thing underneath the filter) Dripping one drop every second - any usual common leaks to look for or do I just need to hope that it seals itself once gaskets start to swell again - it's been 3 years since running it before - motor was freshly rebuilt about 20 hours before the downtime

Thanks for your patience folks - I'm a half decent wrench and of Scottish descent so I'm cheep - hence the old boat and why I'm not even gonna ask about the harsh steering yet ;0)

How many wires are going to your lift motor?

There is an O-ring behind the cooler adaptor, never seen one fix itself.

It's the three wire motor - no trim or anything

Can I just replace the relays with bosch relays or are they some fancy shmancy volvo mil spec marine grade indestructible

Would the o-ring you speak of be at this seam in the cooler? Cuz it's right beneath that that the oil is dripping (dripping from the spot where the rust is) If so, how do I pull the end off of the cooler - I see the bolt head but am not sure how to disconnect the line at the top of the housing (lot of paint around that area.

Here are a couple of schematics:
View attachment Cooling-System-Induction-And-Exh.pdf View attachment Oil cooler.pdf.

You might get lucky and find out that it's the oil filter gasket that's leaking. Otherwise, you'll need to disconnect the long cooler line from the pump and from the bracket under the exhaust manifold as well as unbolt the outlet line to remove the cooler. If you need to do that, be sure to torque the large nut for the cooler according to the specs in the manual.

You can get an aftermarket set of oil cooler o-rings here: http://www.iboats.com/Oil-Cooler-Gasket-Set-Sierra/dm/*******.159214172--**********.541912507--view_id.222328

I'd try the filter first and perhaps save some time and effort.

Edit:
For the relays, the OEM Volvo relays are known to fit correctly. With others, you're just guessing and it's trial and error. Nice part about the Volvo prices is that they don't discriminate against an particular nationality, we all get to pay the same price!

Re: aq 130 / aq250 newbie questions

Quick notes to sum up the day:

A decent wrist tightening of the oil cooler housing solved the oil leak completely - bullet dodged ;0)

A few hours of anal retentive rewiring of the lift motor relays (along with proper relay sockets) cleaned up a lot of old botched previous owner's handywork. The thing was never wired properly in the first place :0/ It now lowers just fine but doesn't have the fortitude to raise itself more than a couple inches - at least it's wired proper and responding. It's enough that it releases the palls so I can beach it gently. Will work on making it stronger after the holidays (camping on a lake) are behind me ;0)

Some minor tweaking of carbs (idle mostly) and she's not bogging on the hole shot like she used to

Disconnected steering and checked for binding of cable or gear or leg - turns out I just have wimpy arms and need to sukk it up ;0) New at this boat stuff LOL

So while she's not a hunnert %, she will get us though a week of fun - I'll tear into re & re of leg over the winter - lift motor, cracking bellows. u joints etc etc etc. I have a funny feeling the bug might have bitten when I wasn't looking.

Thanks for the help folks - probably be asking lots of questions over the next while :)
