I am having issues with my outdrive. It will shift into forward without any problems, but when i try to go to reverse, it is really stiff. I have disconnected the shift cable and it will shift smooth. I can manually shift into forward and reverse via the shift shaft without any issues. What else is in the equation that would make it difficult to shift into reverse? It makes docking a really challenge like this.

Thanx for all your help

Edit...sorry, this is a 275 outdrive

So you are saying you disconnected the cable from the linkage inside the intermediate housing and your shifter control will work smoothly? Did you try to try to turn the shift mechanism inside the outdrive cover with the cable unhooked? Just trying to eliminate a couple things..Your reverse tilt inhibit is also attched to the shift linkage.

Probably just a bad cable. Without any resistance on the cable from the shift mechanism, the cables will move free and easy. A little resistance and they bind up.
Never seen a throttle/shifter control do that either.

That is correct, and yes i can turn the shift mechanism into forward and reverse without any issues. I was leaning towards a bad cable but wanted others opinions on what else it could be.

Re: AQ 270 Outdrive

I ended up replacing the shift cable and it's fixed the problem...much smoother now. But while doing the cable i noticed the the prop center bolt isnt there. All that is holding it on is the locking tab washer. Does anyone(DON S) know what size that bolt is? Sure i can order it thru volvo, but i need it by this weekend and was going to go to fastenal/brafasco etc, i just need to know the size, thread pitch and length

That's a 5/16 18 UNC bolt but I don't have the length. I can take mine off and measure later unless someone else has that answer.
