For those who have done this I am looking for your input on any issues before I start. I have the Hot Spark conversion and the new coil, is there anything that needs modification before installation, or is everything just bolt on without issue? Also when re-setting the timing, is there anything special? Thanks for the help, I am planing on completing this this afternoon after work.

Re: AQ125 electronic ignition help.

I have done a Hot spark installation a couple of times, (both on a Prestolite and a Bosch distributor) and it is a bolt on, connect wires and go. Start the engine and let it run for a short while, BEFORE you do anything. Then you are absolutely sure that it should start. But the engine will probably not start, after the install, since the timing is off. There is nothing to do but turn the distributor a little, until it starts, and then set the timing with a strobe. There is no dwell to think about.

Check the voltage, when the engine is running (charging). If it is too high (above 14.4 volt) the ignition module will get hot and stop working.

Re: AQ125 electronic ignition help.

The kit came with a packet of white grease, my experience tells me that it is a heat sink compound, if it is , is it for underneath the module? Also, the rubber boot and wires that come off the module, It looks like I will have to cut the connectors off, and remove the weather boot since it will not fit in the opening of the distributor, and I will have to extend the (+) and line to the coil. My existing condenser also did not have a (-) Should I run that back to the coil, or just to a good ground like in the screw hole of where the condenser once was? Lastly, should I fill in the hole from the old condenser with rtv to keep it weather tight?

Yes, the white compound is meant to be applied under the module, before mounting. I don't remember having a problem with the rubber boot on the Bosch distributor on my Volvo engine. But I also installed the kit on a Porsche 924 (with Bosch distributor) and maybe I made the cutout larger, with a file, on that one.

Here is my Volvo installation.

The only wiring that you need to do, is to run the two wires from the module to the coil.

I think it's fine to close the holes in the distributor. I made a stainless steel plate instead and used existing screw holes.

Re: AQ125 electronic ignition help.

They always make it seem easy and it should be. So I did the conversion. Long story short my boat was out of commission for a month (mostly due to my lack of time to fix it). I did spend a lot of time (and many beers drank) in the boat and finally took it to a boat mechanic. It took him a while to figure it out but this was my problem: I had solid core sparkplug wires on. Electronic ignition is not compatible with these. After reading 100's of forum posts, I never found a word about this. After we fixed this hiccup, the boat idles and cold starts 100% better. I can cold start it simply by turning the key with no throttle pumping.
