Hi All,

I have a 1982 Volvo Penta AQ125 engine in my 20' Bayliner Cabin Cruiser.
I Started the motor at home about 2 month's ago after sitting idle for a year. It purred like a kitten.
The next week I decided to take it fishing. Went to the ramp and tried to start. She ran for 30 seconds tops and died. Did this repeatedly. Could not keep it running and had to abort fishing trip.

Next weekend, I did a little maintenance. Bought new exhaust manifold (needed one bad), changed timing belt, points, rotor, head gasket, intake manifold gasket.
Tried to start. No luck. Sputtered a few times but would not run.
Took apart carburator and cleaned it out, changed all gaskets, bought new fuel pump. Replaced water separation filter.

Tried to start last night, runs for 10 to 15 seconds and dies. Seems like its starved for fuel. Cannot figure what is wrong. Fuel in tank is 1 year old but always ran in the past with one year old fuel. Also bypassed tank with fresh fuel from a auxilliary container. Still no Luck. Seems like there is not a lot of suction on top of carb when I put my hand over it. Not sure how much suction there should be.

Idle mixture screw is set per instructions, out 1 turn.

Can't setup with timing light until I have it running for a little while but it seems to be in the ballpark if it runs for 30 seconds.

Checked cylinder compression last night, 130psi.

I'm running out of ideas, anybody have any suggestions as to what I should look at next?

Thanks in advance,
Viking5

Re: AQ125 Volvo Fuel Starvation

Have you tried giving it some throttle till it warms up a little? Those engines don't even have chokes, and most won't idle till warmed up some.
That idle mixture screw setting is only a preliminary setting, it needs to be adjusted to the engine after everything else is set.
Might try opening it up another 1/2 turn.

Have you done a fuel pump pressure test?
