AQ125A 270 prop

AQ125A with a 270 outdrive prop is a 14x21 which I am thinking is a little extreme. Boat is an 18ft 82 bayliner capri, book says that it puts out around 117hp. It will only get to about 3300 RPM 23 mph after a long time. The boat was really hard to get on plane before I rebuilt the carb. Any suggestions on the prop size thanks.

Assuming the motor is healthy and the tach accurate a 17" pitch would put you at about 4,000 to 4100.A 15 would add another 300 to 400 rpm.Do you know the max rated rpm?The motor needs to operate near the top of its rated wot(wide open throttle)rpm with a light load.

Sorry I didn't post that, the book I have says max cruising speed should be between 4400-4700. I have checked the compression, timing, points, etc. Thanks.
