AQ125a Coil Voltage Question

I have an 85' Volvo AQ125a engine. I installed a pertronix kit cause the points were burnt. Before i started the wire running to the points was getting 12v. Now the wire running to the pertronix kit is at like 2.5volts.

There are 2 purple wires running in the engine harness one runs to the +12 on the coil and a second wire runs to the from the dash runs to the pertronx kit.

What i am going to do is run the wire to the coil and by pass that second wire running to the distributer and see.

I was wondering any ideas before i try it in the morning.

Should i just run it off the coil or use that second wire.

The coil does not have a ballast resistor on it, it reads 3.5ohms resistance on my meter.

Thanks

Re: AQ125a Coil Voltage Question

The wire to the points is switched to ground when the points are closed, to feed the negative primary coil lead.
When the points are open, you will read 12 volts coming from the coil + connection, then through the primary coil winding to the coil -.

With the points open, there's no current to the coil so you're reading open circuit voltage.

The Pertronix kit has an amplifier that will draw a bit of current, dropping the voltage.

The negative lead from the points to coil - has to pulse ground to open in order to feed current to the coil, then drop it, to collapse the magnetic field in the coil, inducing a high voltage in the secondary winding.

Re: AQ125a Coil Voltage Question

right but the wire i tested is what plugged into the points connector, which is usually hooked up to the +12v on the coil as well as the +12v from the ignition is hooked to the +12v. Which is how i remember seeing it on autos

Re: AQ125a Coil Voltage Question

The wiring diagram shows the purple wire coming from the - side of the coil to the dist. (points) and shows the purple to the + side from the ignition.

The points/ignition connect to the Neg side. I wouldn't bypass or rewire it.

Are you having troubles getting it running again, or what?

Re: AQ125a Coil Voltage Question

I have a pertronix kit on it now, i took the points out as they were toast. There was a +12v switched wire running to the distributer, now with the pertronix kit its only reading like 2.5v

Pertronix manual says to wire the red wire to +12 switched power which is what that wire i had up front read, and the black wire to the negative on the coil. Diagram shows both wires running to the coil.

Whats confusing me why there is 2 12v+ switched purple wires coming from the dash, one is running to the coil and the other the distributer.

One of the previous owners cut 1 of the wires in the harness and bypassed it and connected it togther to bypass the plug and there are som cut and reconnected wires under the helm guages
