my 1983 bayliner with a aq125a has an issue when i have it out of water with the suction cup ears on the outdrive it over heats and steams up 200+. I shut it down before it gets hotter. but when it is in the river it runs ok like 180 deg F and holds steady. does the impeller need replaced or should I just get a test barrel for out of water testing?

I've never tried muffs on mine, only a barrel so I cant speak to which one is better......
However, there is an elbow fitting on the outdrive, near the top under the bellows. They are notorious for rotting out and developing leaks. The water drawn thru the muffs has to pass through this elbow to get to your seawater pump. The point is just sitting in the river and running, this elbow sits just under the water so even if it is rotted and leaking you wont get an overheat.

Until that is, you drive fast for some period of time, then the fitting will come out of the water....thats the way a bad elbow will most often show up, people will say, it will idle and go slow all day without overheating but when you get on it it overheats.

In your case it may be that on the muffs the leaky elbow is getting you but sitting in the river its not.

Reguardless replace the impeller every two years. Yes I have gone 10 years with the same impeller, but that is not the case when you are running hot. On my aq drive I have to duct tape the hole in the bottom of the drive or i wont get enough water to the impeller.

Thanks for the info I am loosing anti-freeze in the heat exchanger a little too fast and its because Its probably evaporating because there is not enough "sea" water to cool it down

Make sure the muffs have plenty of water, long 100 ft runs of hose on normal water pressures usually cause water flow to drop dramatically. The other thing you want to do is plug the secondary water pickup on the drive. It's the round hole in the bottom of the drive just in front of the skeg. I had one of those tapered tube ends from a 5200 tube wired to my muffs.

don, good call on the tapered tube end...never even thought about that. i had to raid my school's stopper collection on the chem lab.

Thanks everyone I took apart the sea pump and It sparked another question.. the pump kind of free floats in there which I understand but the shaft did as well I just was wondering if that was acceptable? The impeller was still good when I took it out I kind of pulled the pump out a bit much. Do I have to take it totally apart to put it back in or can I get longer bolts and work the whole pump back and forth to seat it again?
