Been playing around with timing alittle .Valve cover says 10 when using high octain and 4 on low octain fuel.
just wonding what is best .high or low octain setting for better starting.
I have been using only low octain (89) engine likes to diesel on after shutting off the key.
Anyone else have these problems.

My last adjustment i did was at static and not running .
Anyone else adjust this way.

Your points adjustment can effect the timing as well. Unless of course you have electronic ignition.

What is your Idle set at?

Just might do that next time on the lake,as its just not the same as on the driveway.they just time better when warmed up.

You can warm it up in the driveway and set the timing. I do it all the time. No reason to have to do that on the water.

Re: AQ125a timing

I just don't like having a dry water pump on the driveway.
I cut a rain barrel in half and placed the leg in there with out the prop.
Checked the timeing while running and it was dead on 4 degree as i set it the other day, static timing. As the book said for low octan fuel.
I changed it to 9 degree.Runs smother. Going to fill it with High octan fuel.for this weekend.
Can't find a vacum port on this engine, would like to vacum time this engine .

That is why God created muffs....so you can run it in your driveway!

Timing has nothing to do with vacuum.

I have a set. They just don't do the job as well as a barrell.
Barrel also works good as a muffler

You also need to plug the secondary water pickup hole in the drive. Then they will pick up the water a lot easier.

Vacum gauge is old school if all else fail or if you have an engine without any specs.
With vacum gauge on ,turn distribtar until you get your highest reading on the vacum gauge. then turn it back until it drops 2 points on the gauge.

Re: AQ125a timing

That is a dangerous way of doing it in a boat because a boat engine is so loaded and you really have a good chance of setting it too far advanced.

But my real question would be, why on earth would you use a vacuum guage when a timing light sets it perfectly?
