Hi all,
Specs:

1975 Tahiti Ski Boat 16ft

AQ130c engine
270 outdrive
14x17 prop (left rotation)

Finally got to take this boat on the water and I have a few problems that need to be addressed before I take her out again. So help and/or advice would be most welcome.

Problem/Query 1:
The engine is hard to start and does not like to idle and dies everytime I put it in gear. I have to rev the engine slightly before engaging the drive which makes it quite a hand full when trying to dock.

Problem/Query 2:
At WOT it will NOT go above 3000rpm and according to the speedo it is only approx 20mph.

Problem/Query 3:
The Steering is very stiff and trying to turn left is very very hard and the faster the boat goes the harder it is to turn left. If I let go of the steering wheel the boat wants to go to the right. The exhaust trim on the 270 drive is fully over the left.

Problem/Query 4:
The shift cable seems to be a bit stiff, can this be fixed or does it have to be replaced?

Thank you for your time.

Re: AQ130c/270 running and handling issues

1. Not sure about your's, but some of the old volvos didn't have a choke. May need to warm it up, or does it do it all the time?

2. could be related to #1, recheck your timing and dwell angle.

3. adjust the trim to center. Same result?

4. If it is the cable you'll need to replace. Is it only stiff when shifting? Once in gear does the throttle handle move easily?

Good Luck!!!

Thanks captmello for your input.

Even when it is warm it is hard to start.

2. could be related to #1, recheck your timing and dwell angle.

I have not done this yet, not sure what 'dwell angle' is, will have to research that.

3. adjust the trim to center. Same result?

The trim was all the way over to the left (exhaust flapper to the left) now that I think about it this would want to push the drive itself to right. (light bulb in head just came on)

4. If it is the cable you'll need to replace. Is it only stiff when shifting? Once in gear does the throttle handle move easily?

Yeah, even with the shift cable disconnected at both ends it is not silky smooth to push/pull. It will be replaced.
