Background. This is a fresh rebuild. Noticed that the temp shot up to about 190-210. Had great water flow out of exhaust. So I pulled the thermostat. Placed on stove in water. It opened at 160. And didn't fully open until about 180. Also have a small leak at water pump cover to fix. Thermostat is marked 140. Should I get another thermostat? This one is new but that seems to be a little late on the opening. And could the small leak on the water pump cover cause enough air to be drawn in to cause the thermostat not to open and close properly?

Ayuh,... In any Overheat situation, changin' the raw water impeller is step #1 in the diagnosis,...
A leak in the raw water pump is a Red Herring..

If you have a leak on the raw water pump cover, then you also have an air leak.

You rebuilt your engine and didn't rebuilt the raw water pump?

No. I did Don. I just didnt get a good seal on the cover.Drying it out right now to reseal the the cover. I will give it another run tommorow after I seal up the pump cover tonight.

Yeah Bondo the leak is at the bottom right there by the inlet hose. So I will make sure it is sealed before anything else.

If the raw water strainer is still installed, it's another possible source of an air leak on the suction side. Bottom line is that you have to eliminate all possible sources of the air leak. Hoses, connections, water neck fitting - all are possible sources so you'll need to verify all of them.

Thanks Pirate. Well pulled dip stick this morning and I have water in the oil. And oil in the water. Pulled the plugs all are dry. I suspect my oil cooler, As there is no water present between the seals of the water pump. What do you guy's think? What is the easiest way to test it? Trying to stay positive.

Re: AQ130D Over heating question

Call around to find a radiator shop that is willing to test it and then see if they can just do the tube bundle or if they need the whole assembly. Remove what's necessary and take it in and have them test it. The shop I went to wanted the whole assembly.

Look around for signs of freezing. Some of these are copper cooling lines pushed out of the oil cooler end caps and out of the top of the exhaust manifold. If you're lucky, the lines pushed out of the sockets and relieved the pressure. It could also be a cracked head. I've seen several that were cracked through the valve seat and into the valve stem area. Could also be cracked into the water jacket. Think positive but be aware that reality can be painfully blunt!
