Hey all!! Well, '89 model AQ131/275. Just finishing up a block-up rebuild, and before installing my alt/bracketry/heat exchanger and all that, wanted to fire it over once to make sure the timing was good. The timing belt is walking off both sprockets, but mainly the cam sprocket. I never even had to actually START it, just the action of spinning it over was enough. I have ordered and am expecting tomorrow, a new tensioner, although there was no play at all in the old one. Aside from that part, anyone have any ideas? Thanks :)

The tensioner is about the only thing that can cause the problem. Unless the toothed pulleys are all rough and corroded. then all bets are off.

Did you put the spacer on behind the cam sprocket?

Ok, have got the tensioner, getting ready to put it on. And no, there is no spacer behind the cam sprocket. VolvoPentaStore.com's parts blowup shows it having one, but the bad is it's unavailable. I wonder if some kind of thick washer would suffice?

Pirate, thanks for the website! Those parts blowups they use are actually the same as volvopentastore.com, and that spacer is unavailable. I'm having a friend who owns a machine shop make me one on the mill. Its basically just a glorified washer, but it's special because it has a notch for the dowel that sticks out of the end of the cam. Will update on how it goes :)

The drawing is "camshaft and valve mechanism A0". It shows number 6 as part number 1357572. Try French Creek Marina in upstate NY. Their number is 315-686-3621. If they have it, they will charge you list+ but sometimes have some hard to find parts.

If you go to the link in the post above, they have the part also. $2.73

I called and it's out of stock and NLA. I've had to do that several times for parts for the AQ130 I'm rebuilding. They were the ones who recommended the place in NY. I've used them myself but they definately charge list+ for parts for "antique engines".
