AQ131A timing belt settings question

I understand how to line up the timing belt marks in their proper places when setting up for timing with number one cylinder at TDC.

However, I have read that if I were to then hand turn the engine over once, twice or three times, the marks will not line up again, but that they eventually will if I keep turning it over. I assume that they should realign on turn number four?

If that statement is true, then I can use it to make sure that I've placed the belt correctly.

For whatever reason though, I can't quite get my ahead around this procedure. Can anybody clear this up for me?
Thanks.

Not sure why you would care once you lined them up the first time.

Not really a good idea if you don't have too, It's better to test turn it with the new belt on, That way if you have it right you're all done. if not, then restart from scratch.:faint2:

You are using the Volvo OEM service manual I'd hope?:)

Good luck.:)

Well, I agree. That's why this particular comment that I read somewhere really threw me off. If you set it correctly the first time, that should be it one would think.

But I thought it worth asking the question just in case there was something that I was missing. Not the first time.

Yes, I'm using the service manual, plus printouts that I've collected from this forum and some from the Bayliner forum concerning timing. I'm not a natural mechanic so I have to try really hard to understand the process and not miss any steps.

Natural or not, I'm into it now. I'm pulling the engine out tomorrow to give it a thorough cleaning and to set it up on a test stand so that I can time it and run it without me being upside down in the bilge. Yesterdays compression test gave me 155, 153, 150 and 160 so hopefully I won't need to have the head done? Again, another question to get answered. Thanks.
