I have a 1987 bayliner with a AQ131a volvo penta. I recently got my hands on this boat and it had many problems. I fixed the cooling system, tilt system and now I have the motor running. THe problem is the idle speed is extremely hight. It sounds like it is wide open when I start the boat. I am have many problems adjusting the fast and slow idle. I found the two screws on the Solex 44 PAI carb that I have but the adjustments seem to not be making a difference. When I take the throttle linkage cable off it does have fast idle, in fact I have to push down on the linkage to keep it running. But once I put the cable on the idle speed is sky high. If you are not familiar with the carb, its a 1 bbl and the linkage has a spring above the connection to the carb. If you can help me out that would be great. In fact I am having problems starting the motor sometimes b/c I think the engine is flooding when it tries to start because the idle speed is so high. Thank you for your time.

Jeff

You need to adjust the throttle cable ends to allow the carb linkage to come all the way back to idle.
Ideally, there should be a slight preload of pressure from the cable ends to hold the carb to the idle position.
