So I have been helping a friend on his boat it is a 77 Bayliner liberty with a aq140a and a 280 leg. Our problem is that it starts and idles fine runs strong then dies after 300 yards under load. Then after about five or so minutes it will start fine and die again. We have rebuilt the carbs, set the timing to book specks, new fuel pump, hooked up a external gas tank to fuel pump to rule out vent and pickup tube problem. I?m kind of puzzled here any input will help. The only other thing I can think of is the coil but it is brand new.

After it dies, can you pour a little fuel into the carbs and try to start it. Sure sounds like its running out of fuel. Do you have the solex side draft carbs on that?

Re: aq140a dies after 300ft under load ???

i am working on a aq131a with sortof the same problem right now and i went thru and checked the whole fuel system thinking the same thing but i am thinking ignition problem now .... i am installing solid state module instead of points in the distibutor and a new coil for this ignition havent got it done yet but probably this week ... i have read a few posts about coils burning up and i have to believe this is a related issue so i am going to try to make it go away with this .... i will let you know if it works
