Aq170a won't start

Engine won't start...if i try it for an hour sometimes i can get a little putter out of it and throttle a bunch of times and it will catch and start . If it does start and i warm it up, it will start all day no problem. 2nd question, do the spark plugs on this engine need gap adjustment? if so where should it be set at ?

When was the last time it had a full tuneup? \

Spark plugs don't just need "adjustment" if they need adjusted it means they are worn out.

That engine has points ignition, and cars haven't used points in many, many, years. Nor carbs for that matter.

I have to side with Don on this one. I have an AQ190 and did a full tune up and it ran great. Start with that if you've never done it to the boat since you've owned it.

Do you know how to do a compression test? Do you know how to use a dwell meter? timing light? shop tach? how to adjust dwell, timing, and idle mixture? Are you mechanically inclined, more than knowing the difference between a socket and a screwdriver?
If the answer to most of them is no, then find a shop
Ask them how much they charge. A lot depends on access to what needs done, and shop rates. Not many shops will even touch the old 170's.

Are you using the throttle only button to pump the throttle and give it throttle while cranking or just trying to start in neutral?

I've done quite a bit of work on it thx to you guys, however compression dwell meter etc is out of my league ...i just dropped it at a shop , 150 to look at it fingers crossed . thx again
